The most common injection
site is the abdomen
(or stomach). The back of the upper arms, the upper buttocks or hips,
and the outer side of the thighs are also used.
- Abdomen (stomach area) – Most commonly used. Inject into the fatty tissue at least 2 inches (5 cm) away from the navel.
- Outer thigh – Front or outer part of the upper thigh.
- Back of the upper arm – Fatty area on the back of the arm.
- Upper buttocks/hip area – Fatty tissue in the upper outer buttock.
Important tips
- Rotate injection sites to prevent lumps, scarring, or poor insulin absorption.
- Stay within the same general area (e.g., abdomen) for a period of time and rotate spots within that area.
- Avoid injecting into:
- Scar tissue
- Bruised, swollen, or tender skin
- Areas with lumps (lipohypertrophy)
- Moles or irritated skin
Absorption speed
- Fastest: Abdomen
- Moderate: Upper arm
- Slower: Thigh
- Slowest: Buttocks
