Behavior Analysts (behavioral psychologists for those who don't know what that is) have done many studies that show reinforcement (I.e. reward, praise, etc) is much more effective than punishment. This is one reason many psychologists are against spanking. They don't necessarily claim spanking doesn't work, but that there are way more effective ways to improve behavior.
