Herostones for Rooster (Kozhikkal -கோழிக்கல்) in Thondai Region by Sri, Iravatham Mahadevan, Aavanam 8 by Tamilnadu Archaeological Society
There are many Herostone found for Rooster (Cocks) in Thondai Mandalam region (Kanchipuram, Tamilnadu) . This type of stones had taken in the memory of Rooster which died in a Rooster fight (Game).
Cock fighting or Rooster fighting was famous entertainment sport in Early Sangam period and still in practice some places in Tamilnadu. Iravatham sir explains the characteristics of Arasalapuram and Inthaloore Rooster Stones in this article. The Inscriptions are in vatteluthu so these stone are belongs to 5th or 6th century CE. He also gave many references for Rooster Stone from Purapporul Venba Maalai and Kurnthogai (Early Tamil Literature -Sangam) in the article.
