ஜப்பான் ஒழித்த சாதி Burakumin Japan's untouchables

100 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பும் ஜப்பான் நாட்டிலும் தீண்டாமை தலைவிரித்தாடியது...

கீழ் சாதியனர் என்ற வார்த்தைக்கு ஈடாக ஜப்பானிய மொழியில் 'புராக்குமீன்' (Burakumin) என்று கூறி சில மக்களை அடிமைப்படுத்தி வைத்திருந்தனர்.

Japan has a reputation for being a homogeneous, mostly harmonious society. There are few foreigners, linguistic differences are rare and on the surface, class distinctions are largely absent. But, as Mike Sunda discovered, there is one, often hidden, exception: Japan's untouchables. 

Burakumin, meaning "hamlet people", dates back to the feudal era. It originally referred to the segregated communities made up of labourers working in occupations that were considered impure or tainted by death, such as executioners, butchers and undertakers.

The lowest of these outcasts, known as Eta, meaning "abundance of filth", could be killed with impunity by members of the Samurai if they had committed a crime. As recently as the mid-19th Century a magistrate is recorded as declaring that "an Eta is worth one-seventh of an ordinary person".

In the corner of a pristine room tucked away in Tokyo's Shibaura meat market is a table topped with a stack of crudely composed hate mail - evidence of prejudice that dates back to medieval times.

Slaughtermen, undertakers, those working with leather and in other "unclean" professions such as sanitation have long been marginalised in Japan. That prejudice continues to this day and especially for those working in the Shibaura abattoir.

Never mind that the men here are dicing up some of the most expensive and highly prized animals on the planet. This is where Japan's world-famous Wagyu beef is prepared - prime steaks shot through with ribbons of fat, that can set you back eye-watering prices.

Major incidents

In the mid-1970s, Buraku rights groups uncovered a 330-page handwritten list of Burakumin names and community locations being sold to employers under the radar. Executives were, in turn, using the information in order to screen job applicants. The event caused a major scandal in Japan, as companies including Toyota, Nissan, Honda and Daihatsu were found to have purchased the book, along with thousands of individuals. Publication and sale of the book have since been banned.

In 2001, future Prime Minster Taro Aso reportedly said: ‘We are not going to let someone from the Buraku become the prime minister, are we?’ in a closed meeting when discussing the political future of Hiromu Nonaka, then the second-highest figure in Japanese government and a contender to succeed the then-Prime Minister Yoshirō Mori. Nonaka withdrew his bid for the lead soon after the remark.

In 2009, there was yet another incident when Google Earth incorporated historical maps of Tokyo and Osaka that specified the location of Buraku villages in feudal times, once again highlighting the ongoing issue of ancestry and profiling of Burakumin members.

1945 ஆம் ஆண்டில் இரண்டாம் உலகப்போர் முடிவில் ஜப்பான் இரண்டு அணு குண்டுகளால் படு தோல்வியடைந்த பிறகு குறைவான மக்கள் தொகையில், பொருளாதாரமற்ற சூழ்நிலையில் திக்கு முக்காடியது...இனி ஜப்பான் அவ்வளவு தான், சரித்திரத்தின் பக்கங்களில் காணாமல் போய்விடும் என்று உலகம் உச்சுக்கொட்டியது..

காலங்காலமாக ஆண்ட பரம்பரையாக இருந்து, நாட்டை உலகப்போரில் சீர்குலைத்ததற்கு மன்னர் "ஹிரோஹிட்டோ' (Hirohito) பொதுமன்னிப்பு கேட்டு ஆட்சி அதிகாரத்திலிருந்து விலகி கொண்டார்... அவருக்கு பதில் போர்களில் பெரும் பங்கு வகித்த அவரது மந்திரி 'டோஜோ' (Tojo) போர் வெறியை தூண்டியதற்காக தூக்கிலிடப்பட்டார்...(அப்பவும் மன்னர்களே தப்பினர் அவரின் எடுபுடிகளான மந்திரிகள் மாட்டிக்கொண்டனர்)

பின்னர் வந்த மக்களாட்சி முறை ஜப்பானிய மக்கள் மத்தியிலுள்ள சாதி பிரிவினைகளை முதலில் ஒழித்தது...ஜப்பான் வளர வேண்டுமென்றால் அனைவருமே 'ஜப்பானியர்' என்ற சொல்லை தவிர 'நான் சாமுராய் இனம், என்‌ பரம்பரை வீரப்பரம்பரை, நான் அவன் நான் இவன்' போன்ற வீண் பெருமைக்கு இனி இடமில்லை என்று திட்டவட்டமாக நின்றது..

ஜீச்ஹிரோ மதுமோட்டா (Jiichiro Matumoto 1887-1966) எனும் அரசியல் தலைவர் புராகுமின் சமூகத் தந்தை எனப் போற்றப்படுகிறார்

பொது மக்களின் வேலை நேரத்தை அதிகரித்தது..விடுமுறைகளை குறைத்தது...புராக்குமீன்களை ஊருக்குள் அழைத்தது...ஊரார் அனைவருக்கும் ஒரே கல்வியை தந்தது...சாதிய புனைப்பெயர்களை அழித்தது...உலக நாடுகளின் பண உதவியுடன் ஜப்பானியர் அனைவருமே தம் தம் திறமையை வைத்து ஏற்றுமதி தொழில் தொடங்க குறைந்த வட்டியில் கடன் தந்தது...அமெரிக்காவுடனும் ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளுடனும் தொழில் ரீதியாக கைகோர்த்து நின்றது... முதலாளித்துவமாக வெளியே தெரிந்தாலும் உள்ளே சிறந்த சோசலிச கொள்கை கொண்ட நாடாக பரிணமித்தது...

"ஜப்பானிய நாட்டில் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டது"(Made in Japan) என்றால் அதன் தரமே உலக நாடுகளின் தரத்தை விட உயர்ந்த தரமாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்பதில் எள்ளவும் விட்டு கொடுக்கவில்லை...நாடு மெல்ல மெல்ல முன்னேறியது...இத்துபோன பழைய பெருமைகள் பேசி, எங்கள் சாதி, எங்கள் பரம்பரை, எங்கள் இனம் என்று முட்டுகட்டையாக கூவிய சில பழமைவாதிகளை ஈவிரக்கமின்றி கைதி செய்து கடுமையாகக் தண்டித்தது...ஆன்மீகத்தை விட அறிவியல் சார் நாத்திகத்தையே முதல் கொள்கையாக பாவித்தது...

கலப்பு சாதி திருமணங்களை வலு கட்டாயமாக்கியது..சம்பந்தி வீட்டார் என்ன சாதி? நம் மேனேஜர் என்ன சாதி? சக பணியாளர் என்ன சாதி? எதிர் வீட்டுக்காரன் என்ன சாதி ? என்று மோப்பம் பிடிப்பதை அரசாங்கம் தண்டனை குற்றமாகவே மாற்றியது...சாதியை பற்றி பேசினாலே கடும் தண்டனை என்பதால் வெறும் 30 ஆண்டுகளில் கடை சாதியான புராக்குமீன்

இரத்தமும் ஆண்ட சாதியான சாமூராய் இரத்தமும் அனைத்து ஜப்பானியர் உடலிலும் ஓடியது..

விளைவு...??

இந்தியா இன்னமும் 100 ஆண்டுகளில் வளரமுடியாத சமூக வளர்ச்சியை பெற்று இன்று ஜப்பான் நாம் எட்ட முடியாத தூரத்தில் உயர்ந்து நிற்கிறது‌..

"புராக்குமீன்" என்ற வெறுப்பை ஒரு கடந்தகால கனவாக ஜப்பான் மக்களிடம் மறக்கடித்து சாதி பிரிவினைகளை வென்று உலக நாடுகளில் சிறந்த மக்கள் மேம்பாடான முதல் 10 நாடுகளில் ஒன்றாக ஜப்பான் திகழ்கிறது‌ ......
