Meghalaya's Living Bridge

A bridge in Meghalaya was constructed by the living roots of fig trees. Meghalaya's 
Living root bridges are an incredible example of bioengineering and traditional knowledge. Built by the Khasi and Jaintia tribes, these bridges are formed by training the aerial roots of rubber trees (Ficus elastica) over rivers and streams. Over the decades, the roots intertwine and strengthen, creating sturdy, long-lasting structures that can support the weight of many people.

Some key facts about Meghalaya's living root bridges:

  • They can take 10 to 30 years to become fully functional.

  • Some are over 100 feet long and can last for centuries.

  • The most famous one is the Double Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat village.

  • Unlike conventional bridges, they grow stronger over time as the roots continue to develop.
