Understanding HIV and AIDS
🧬 What is HIV?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
It’s a virus that attacks the body’s immune system, specifically the CD4 (T-helper) cells, which help fight infections.
Over time, if HIV is not treated, it destroys so many of these cells that the body can’t fight infections and certain cancers effectively.
⚡ How HIV Spreads
HIV is found in certain body fluids of people who have the virus, including:

Blood

Semen and pre-seminal fluid

Vaginal fluids

Rectal fluids

Breast milk
It spreads mainly through:

Unprotected sexual contact with an infected person

Sharing needles or syringes

From mother to child during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding

Rarely, through blood transfusions (in places where blood is not screened)
🚫 How HIV Does Not Spread
HIV cannot be spread by:

Touching, hugging, or shaking hands

Sharing food, water, or utensils

Mosquito or insect bites
-
Using the same toilet or bathing facilities
⚙️ What is AIDS?
AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.
It’s the most advanced stage of HIV infection, when the immune system is severely damaged and the person becomes vulnerable to opportunistic infections (infections that take advantage of the weakened immune system).
Not everyone with HIV develops AIDS.
With proper treatment, HIV can be controlled, and people can live long, healthy lives without progressing to AIDS.

The main treatment is Antiretroviral Therapy (ART).

ART helps:

Lower the amount of HIV in the body (viral load)

Protect the immune system

Prevent transmission to others

When taken consistently, ART can make the viral load undetectable, meaning the virus cannot be transmitted sexually (U = U: Undetectable = Untransmittable).

You can reduce your risk by:

Using condoms correctly and consistently

Taking PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) if at high risk

Never sharing needles or syringes

Ensuring blood is tested before transfusion
