Based on the novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith, Strangers on a Train is often mentioned amongst Alfred Hitchcock's best works.
The psychology of female serial killers
This misconception, the psychologists warn, is a "deadly mistake". They point out that one in six serial killers are female. Their crimes tend to go undetected for longer than their male counterparts, likely in part because "our culture is in denial of women's proclivity for aggression."
Harrison and her team have profiled 64 US female serial killers active between the years 1821 to 2008. The researchers used the murderpedia.org website to identify these killers and they verified the cases they found using reputable news sources.
The female serial killers had murdered between them at least 331 victims (making an average of 6 victims each). Their victims are of both sexes, but disproportionately male. The women had an average of age of 32 at the time of their first killing, and poisoning was the most common method. However, between them, the women used a range of murderous techniques, as the researchers explained:
"Contrary to preconceived notions about women being incapable of these extreme crimes, the women in our study poisoned, smothered, burned, choked, shot, bludgeoned, and shot newborns, children, elderly, and ill people as well as healthy adults; most often those who knew and likely trusted them."Many of the homicidal women had stereotypically female professions, including being nurses and baby-sitters. They tended to be above average in physical attractiveness, which may have helped to engender trust in their victims.
As to motives, the most common was "hedonistic", a category in forensic psychology that refers to killing for financial gain, lust or thrill, with nearly half the sample fitting this category. The next most common motive was "power-seeking", which includes killing people in one's care.
The researchers urge caution regarding the factors that contributed to these women becoming serial killers. Apart from anything else, the historical records are incomplete and the absence of information does not mean that a given factor was not contributory. Nonetheless, Harrison and her team highlight several noticeable patterns in the data: a greater proportion of the women, as compared with the general population, had: a history of having been physically or sexually abused; drug or alcohol problems; and a diagnosis or signs of mental illness.
Quotes from some of the killers hint at their psychopathological thinking:
"They [the children] bothered me, so I decided to kill them."A striking contrast with male serial killers is the relative absence of sexual violence and deviance. Two exceptions were a female serial killer who was a rapist, and another who reportedly barked like a dog during sex. But overall, the researchers highlighted how the women in their study primarily killed for resources, while their male counterparts kill for sex. This follows evolutionary theory, Harrison and her co-authors explained, in the sense that men are said to be motivated more by seeking multiple sexual opportunities, while women are motivated to find a committed partner with sufficient resources. "However," they added, "although an evolutionary framework can offer understanding, we stress that these heinous acts are a vicious extension of unconscious drives and are not therefore 'normal' or 'excused' ... ".
"I like to attend funerals. I'm happy when someone is dying."
"That is my ambition, to have killed more people – more helpless people – than any man or woman who has ever lived."
The new analysis points to a worrying trend: a 150 per cent increase in the number of reported cases of female serial killers since 1975. This study has obvious limitations, most obviously the reliance on historical records and news reports, and its exclusive focus on US killers. However, it makes a valuable contribution to a neglected topic.
The researchers concluded: "Increasing our understanding of serial killers may minimise the number of victims potentially lost in the future while maximising the effectiveness of interventions to prevent vulnerable individuals from taking a killing path."

TADIPATRI SRI BUGGA RAMA LINGESGHWARA TEMPLE

The Sri Bugga Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple is one of the finest surviving examples of Vijayanagara architecture in South India. It is located at Tadipatri, in Anantapur (Ananthapuramu) District, Andhra Pradesh, on the southern bank of the Penna (Pennar) River.
History
- The temple was built between 1490 and 1509 CE during the Vijayanagara Empire.
- It was commissioned by Pemmasani Ramalinga Nayudu I, a renowned chieftain of the Vijayanagara rulers.
- The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped as Sri Bugga Ramalingeswara Swamy.
Why is it called "Bugga"?
The Telugu word "Bugga" means natural spring. A perennial underground spring continuously flows into the sanctum and bathes the Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Linga, making this temple unique among Shiva temples in India.
Architectural Highlights
The Sri Bugga Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple at Tadipatri is regarded by architectural historians as one of the masterpieces of late Vijayanagara temple architecture (15th–16th century). Its extraordinary sculptural richness rivals the famous temples at Hampi and Lepakshi, making it one of the finest examples of granite stone craftsmanship in South India.
1. Temple Layout
The temple follows the traditional Dravidian architectural plan, consisting of:
- Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum): Houses the self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shiva Linga.
- Ardha Mandapa: Transitional hall connecting the sanctum and the main hall.
- Mukha Mandapa: A large pillared assembly hall used for worship and festivals.
- Prakaras: Enclosing walls with richly carved gateways.
- Vimana: The tower above the sanctum, covered with sculptural decoration.
2. The Unfinished Gopurams
One of the temple's most distinctive features is its unfinished gateway towers (gopurams).
- Architectural historian James Anderson described them as "wonders" because even though they remain incomplete, they display exceptionally refined carving.
- The north gopuram is considered the most elaborate, containing hundreds of miniature sculptures carved with remarkable precision.
3. Sculptural Program
The temple walls function as a stone narrative, illustrating major Hindu scriptures.
Ramayana Panels
The reliefs depict scenes such as:
- Rama breaking Shiva's bow
- Marriage of Rama and Sita
- Exile to the forest
- Hanuman's journey to Lanka
- Battle with Ravana
- Coronation of Rama (Pattabhishekam)
Each episode is carved in sequential panels, allowing devotees to "read" the epic while circumambulating the temple.
Mahabharata Panels
The sculptures also portray:
- Krishna as Arjuna's charioteer
- The Bhagavad Gita discourse
- Bhishma on the bed of arrows
- Episodes involving Bhima and Duryodhana
- Various scenes from the Kurukshetra war
4. Pillars – A Showcase of Vijayanagara Sculpture
The mandapa pillars demonstrate extraordinary craftsmanship.
They feature:
- Dancing maidens
- Musicians
- Warriors
- Guardians (Dvarapalas)
- Yalis (mythical lion-like creatures)
- Makaras (mythical aquatic creatures)
- Floral scrolls
- Decorative geometric patterns
Several pillars are carved so deeply that they appear almost detached from the parent stone, showcasing the sculptors' mastery.
5. Musical Pillars
Near the Vishnu shrine are seven slender stone pillars that resonate with the seven musical notes (Saptaswaras) when gently tapped.
These were carefully engineered by selecting suitable granite and shaping each pillar to produce a distinct tone—a remarkable achievement in medieval stone craftsmanship.
6. Ceiling Carvings
The ceilings display:
- Fully bloomed inverted lotus medallions
- Concentric floral designs
- Geometric mandalas
- Divine figures arranged in circular compositions
The depth and symmetry of these carvings demonstrate advanced stone-cutting techniques.
7. Vimana (Sanctum Tower)
The two-tiered (Dvitala) Dravidian vimana is richly decorated with:
- Shiva in various forms
- Vishnu avatars
- Durga as Mahishasuramardini
- Ganesha
- Celestial musicians (Gandharvas)
- Dancing apsaras
- Kirtimukha (protective face motifs)
These sculptures combine religious symbolism with artistic elegance.
8. Decorative Motifs
The temple incorporates numerous symbolic carvings, including:
- Elephants representing strength and stability
- Horses symbolizing royal power
- Hamsas (swans) representing purity
- Parrots pecking fruit, symbolizing abundance
- Creepers and lotus motifs signifying prosperity
- The Vijayanagara imperial emblem featuring the Varaha (boar) along with the sun and moon, expressing royal authority and eternal sovereignty.
9. Natural Spring in the Sanctum
The defining architectural and spiritual feature is the perennial underground spring (Bugga), which continuously bathes the Shiva Linga. This required careful planning so that flowing water remained integrated into the sanctum without undermining the stone structure—an impressive feat of hydraulic engineering as well as sacred design.
10. Why the Temple is Architecturally Important
Architectural historians value the Bugga Ramalingeswara Temple because it:
- Represents the mature phase of Vijayanagara architecture.
- Combines structural engineering with exceptionally intricate sculpture.
- Integrates mythology, religion, music, and symbolism into a unified architectural program.
- Preserves one of the richest collections of granite relief sculpture in South India.
- Demonstrates the high level of artistic achievement attained by the artisans of the Pemmasani Nayaks under the Vijayanagara Empire.
- Magnificent Dravidian-style temple with intricate stone carvings.
- Beautiful sculptures depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
- The temple has unfinished gopurams (gateway towers), considered architectural marvels.
- The seven musical pillars near the Vishnu shrine produce the seven musical notes (Saptaswaras) when gently struck.
- The Shiva Linga faces west, an uncommon feature in Hindu temples.
Festivals
The most important festival celebrated here is Maha Shivaratri, during which thousands of devotees visit the temple. Annual Brahmotsavam celebrations are also held with great devotion.
Visitor Information
- Location: Tadipatri, Ananthapuramu District, Andhra Pradesh.
- Distance from Tadipatri Railway Station: Approximately 4 km.
- Best time to visit: October to March, or during Maha Shivaratri.

How to measure the quality of growth
- First, the quality of growth has been improving over the past two decades.
- Second, the least performing countries tend to catch up the best performers over time, though at a slow pace.
- Third, there are cross-country variations in income levels and regions (Figure 4).
- Fourth, empirical investigations allow nailing down the main drivers of the quality of growth index.
