While the details are somewhat vague, Project Glass by Google became viral once out of the starting gate. Since it started yesterday, over 4 million people already viewed the video with few thousand more each hour. So what is it? In part, it is a testament to the popularity of Google+, the search engine giant’s answer to the ever growing Facebook. But Google Project Glass is also a glimpse into the not so distant future, where augmented reality and wearable communication device/computer are daily staples. In fact, the technology behind the concept are already in use. For example, the classified Target Acquisition and Designation Sights, Pilot Night Vision System (TADS/PNVS) found on the Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopter gave its pilots all around situation awareness. Google’s Project Glass does the same except luckily you won’t be pointing a chain gun or missile with it.

Google confirmed it would be testing the Project Glass prototypes publicly when it officially revealed the project earlier this week. However, the photos released of the headset showed it non-functional, and were labeled as “design studies”; even the video demo of the project’s abilities was rendered rather than real-world footage from a device itself, leading to suggestions that the actual prototypes could be a whole lot clunkier. That doesn’t appear to be the case, however, and we have to say we’re more excited by the idea of the glasses than before having seen them in the wild. The eyepiece itself looks suitably discrete, though Brin told The Verge that “right now you really just see it reboot” in terms of functionality and that potential buyers should “give us time” to get it to market-readiness.
