AJANTA CAVES

AJANTA CAVES ...The Ajanta Caves (Ajiṇṭhā leni; Marathi: अजिंठा लेणी) in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, India are about 300 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which from about 1500BCE.

The style of Ajanta has exerted a considerable influence in India and elsewhere, extending, in particular, to Java. With its two groups of monuments corresponding to two important moments in Indian history, the Ajanta cave ensemble bears exceptional testimony to the evolution of Indian art, as well as to the determining role of the Buddhist community, intellectual and religious foyers, schools and reception centres in the India of the Gupta and their immediate successors.
The caves are situated 100 km north-east of Ellora, 104 km from Aurangabad and 52 km from Jalgaon Railway Station. They are cut into the volcanic lava of the Deccan in the forest ravines of the Sahyadri Hills and are set in beautiful sylvan surroundings. These magnificent caves containing carvings that depict the life of Buddha, and their carvings and sculptures are considered to be the beginning of classical Indian art.
The 29 caves were excavated beginning around 200 BC, but they were abandoned in AD 650 in favour of Ellora. Five of the caves were temples and 24 were monasteries, thought to have been occupied by some 200 monks and artisans. The Ajanta Caves were gradually forgotten until their 'rediscovery' by a British tiger-hunting party in 1819.
The Ajanta site comprises thirty caves cut into the side of a cliff which rises above a meander in the Waghora River. Today the caves are reached by a road which runs along a terrace mid-way up the cliff, but each cave was once linked by a stairway to the edge of the water. This is a Buddhist community, comprising five sanctuaries or Chaitya-grihas (caves 9, 10, 19, 26 and 29) and monastic complex sangharamas or viharas. A first group of caves was created in the 2nd century BC: the chaitya-grihas open into the rock wall by doorways surmounted by a horse-shoe shaped bay. The ground plan is a basilical one: piers separate the principal nave from the side aisles which join in the apsis to permit the ritual circumambulation behind the (commemorative monument). This rupestral architecture scrupulously reproduces the forms and elements visible in wooden constructions.
A second group of caves was created at a later date, the 5th and 6th centuries AD, during the Gupta and post-Gupta periods. These caves were excavated during the supremacy of the Vakatakas and Guptas. According to inscriptions, Varahadeva, the minister of the Vakataka king, Harishena (c. AD 475-500), dedicated Cave 16 to the Buddhist sangha while Cave 17 was the gift of the prince, a feudatory. An inscription records that the Buddha image in Cave 4 was the gift of some Abhayanandi who hailed from Mathura.
The earlier architectural formulas were re-employed but treated in an infinitely richer and more ample manner. The decoration attained, at this time, an unequalled splendour: the statuary is numerous (it was already permissible to represent Buddha as a human; these representations are found both on the facades and in the interior). Finally, the wall painting, profuse and sensitive, constitutes, no doubt, the most striking artistic achievement of Ajanta.
Under the impulse of the Gupta dynasty, Indian art in effect reached its apogee. The Ajanta Caves are generally decorated with painted or sculpted figures of supple form and classic balance with which the name of the dynasty has remained synonymous. The refined lightness of the decoration, the balance of the compositions, the marvellous beauty of the feminine figures place the paintings of Ajanta among the major achievements of the Gupta and post-Gupta style and confer on them the ranking of a masterpiece of universal pictorial art.

The caves include paintings and sculptures described by the government Archaeological Survey of India as "the finest surviving examples of Indian art, particularly painting",which are masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, with figures of the Buddha and depictions of the Jataka tales.

The caves were built in two phases starting around the 1500century BCE, with the second group of caves built around 400–650 BCE according to older accounts

The caves are located in the Indian state of Maharashtra, 104 kilometres (64 miles) from the city of Aurangabad.

They are 100 kilometres (62 miles) from the Ellora Caves, which contain Hindu and Jain temples as well as Buddhist caves, the last dating from a period similar to Ajanta. The Ajanta caves are cut into the side of a cliff that is on the south side of a U-shaped gorge on the small river Waghora (or Wagura), and although they are now along and above a modern pathway running across the cliff they were originally reached by individual stairs or ladders from the side of the river 35 to 110 feet below.

The area was previously heavily forested, and after the site ceased to be used the caves were covered by jungle until accidentally rediscovered in 1819 by a British officer on a hunting party. They are Buddhist monastic buildings, apparently representing a number of distinct "monasteries" or colleges. The caves are numbered 1 to 28 according to their place along the path, beginning at the entrance. Several are unfinished and some barely begun and others are small shrines, included in the traditional numbering as e.g. "9A"; "Cave 15A" was still hidden under rubble when the numbering was done.

Further round the gorge are a number of waterfalls, which when the river is high are audible from outside the caves.

The caves form the largest corpus of early Indian wall-painting; other survivals from the area of modern India are very few, though they are related to ancient paintings at Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. The elaborate architectural carving in many caves is also very rare, and the style of the many figure sculptures is highly local, found only at a few nearby contemporary sites, although the Ajanta tradition can be related to the later Hindu Ellora Caves and other sites.

SAI BABA USES UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS TO CURE

The ways of saints cannot be predicted, they use all sorts to cure devotees of their sickness which are unconventional even by traditional or modern standards. In Sai Satcharitra Chaper XII Sai Baba said "Those who are fortunate and whose demerits have vanished; take to My worship. If you always say 'Sai, Sai' I shall take you over the seven seas; believe in these words, and you will be certainly benefited. I do not need any paraphernalia of worship – either eight-fold or sixteen-fold. I rest there where there is full devotion". Here we see one more such case of unconventional treatment given by Sai Baba after His MahasamadiPhoto: SAI BABA USES UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS TO CURE

Smt Mani Sahukar author of the book The Saint of Shirdi had a severe throat infection in 1950. Being a sincere student of Hindustani classical songs, she was unable to sing due to her throat infection. She consulted many doctors but in vain. She then visited Shirdi and prayed at SAI SAMADHI for the cure of her sore throat. When she returned to her room behind Gurusthan at about 7.30pm, she heard something rustling in her sari and a small paper packet dropped on the floor. Wondering what it could be, she picked it up and opened it and guess what she found. No, not udhi but seven tiny white globules commonly used in homeopathy. Her friend on hearing this from Mrs Sahukar, told her to take those tablets as SAI prasad which the latter did by putting them all in her mouth. On her return home from Shirdi, Mrs. Sahukar found to her immense joy that her throat was clear and she could sing as before. Wow! What a miracle.

RAPE... The Story of one Indian woman (!)..

After being raped, I was wounded; My honour was not: Sohaila Abdulali
"When I fought to live that night, I hardly knew what I was fighting for. A male friend and I had gone for a walk up a mountain near my home. Four armed men caught us and made us climb to a secluded spot, where they raped me for several hours, and beat both of us. They argued among themselves about whether or not to kill us, and finally let us go.

At 17, I was just a child. Life rewarded me richly for surviving. I stumbled home, wounded and traumatized, to a fabulous family. With them on my side, so much came my way. I found true love. I wrote books. I saw a kangaroo in the wild. I caught buses and missed trains. I had a shining child. The century changed. My first gray hair appeared.

Too many others will never experience that. They will not see that it gets better, that the day comes when one incident is no longer the central focus of your life. One day you find you are no longer looking behind you, expecting every group of men to attack. One day you wind a scarf around your throat without having a flashback to being choked. One day you are not frightened anymore.

Rape is horrible. But it is not horrible for all the reasons that have been drilled into the heads of women. It is horrible because you are violated, you are scared, someone else takes control of your body and hurts you in the most intimate way. It is not horrible because you lose your “virtue.” It is not horrible because your father and your brother are dishonored. I reject the notion that my virtue is located in my vagina, just as I reject the notion that men’s brains are in their genitals.

If we take honor out of the equation, rape will still be horrible, but it will be a personal, and not a societal, horror. We will be able to give women who have been assaulted what they truly need: not a load of rubbish about how they should feel guilty or ashamed, but empathy for going through a terrible trauma.

The week after I was attacked, I heard the story of a woman who was raped in a nearby suburb. She came home, went into the kitchen, set herself on fire and died. The person who told me the story was full of admiration for her selflessness in preserving her husband’s honor. Thanks to my parents, I never did understand this.

The law has to provide real penalties for rapists and protection for victims, but only families and communities can provide this empathy and support. How will a teenager participate in the prosecution of her rapist if her family isn’t behind her? How will a wife charge her assailant if her husband thinks the attack was more of an affront to him than a violation of her?

At 17, I thought the scariest thing that could happen in my life was being hurt and humiliated in such a painful way. At 49, I know I was wrong: the scariest thing is imagining my 11-year-old child being hurt and humiliated. Not because of my family’s honor, but because she trusts the world and it is infinitely painful to think of her losing that trust. When I look back, it is not the 17-year-old me I want to comfort, but my parents. They had the job of picking up the pieces.

This is where our work lies, with those of us who are raising the next generation. It lies in teaching our sons and daughters to become liberated, respectful adults who know that men who hurt women are making a choice, and will be punished.

When I was 17, I could not have imagined thousands of people marching against rape in India, as we have seen these past few weeks. And yet there is still work to be done. We have spent generations constructing elaborate systems of patriarchy, caste and social and sexual inequality that allow abuse to flourish. But rape is not inevitable, like the weather. We need to shelve all the gibberish about honor and virtue and did-she-lead-him-on and could-he-help-himself. We need to put responsibility where it lies: on men who violate women, and on all of us who let them get away with it while we point accusing fingers at their victims."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

New cell type fights infections

Dr Michael Chopin and Dr Stephen Nutt have revealed that Langerhans cells, the single cell type behind the skin's immune defence, actually has two types. The finding could have repercussions for infections and cancer.
The layers of skin that form the first line of defence in the body’s fight against infection have revealed a unanticipated secret.
The single cell type that was thought to be behind the skin’s immune defence has been found to have a doppelganger, with researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute showing the cells, despite appearing identical, are actually two different types.
Institute scientists Dr Michael Chopin, Dr Stephen Nutt and colleagues from the institute's Molecular Immunology division have been investigating Langerhans cells, the immune cells that provide the first line of defence against attacks through the skin.
Until recently, scientists believed that, because they looked identical, all Langerhans cells were also genetically identical and had the same function. However Dr Nutt said the research team, with collaborators from the National Institutes of Health, US, have shown this is not the case.
“Langerhans cells are produced and found in the skin and are quite unique among immune cells because they do not have a definite lifespan, they can last for a lifetime,” Dr Nutt said. “They are only replaced when necessary, such as when the skin is damaged by a burn or a cut. When that happens, new Langerhans cells have to be produced by the bone marrow. These cells look the same, so it was always thought that they were genetically the same and their function was the same. We have shown that this isn’t the case.”
This surprise finding, published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, could have repercussions for developing and refining therapies for skin infections and skin cancers.
Although Langerhans cells were discovered nearly 150 years ago, Dr Chopin said there were still a lot of gaps in our knowledge about how they develop and their role in responding to foreign invaders. Dr Chopin said the research team was initially trying to understand the role of Langerhans cells. “Not everything that makes contact with the skin is harmful, so it is important the immune system doesn’t overreact,” he said. “We were trying to find out whether Langerhans cells were there to activate an immune response to invaders, or to suppress the immune system to prevent it from overreacting.
“While designing the experiment, we found that the genes that define the Langerhans cells that are produced in the skin were different to those of Langerhans cells that came from bone marrow. In essence we now know that there are two different types of Langerhans cells where we thought there was one. We now need to find out if they behave differently as well.”
Dr Nutt said the research could explain why some promising new drugs have not had the desired effect in the clinic. “Some clinical trials of drugs that were designed to help boost Langerhans cells in response to infections have not responded as the researchers expected,” Dr Nutt said. “Our finding may help explain why these drugs didn’t work outside the laboratory and our current research may provide guidance in developing therapeutics to treat skin infections or skin cancer.”
The research was funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council and the Victorian Government.

Damages Caused By Alcohol

Some Tips which can help in increasing the positive energy of your house:

1) Height of the ceiling of the home should be atleast 12 feets, i.e. at least twice the height of an adult, in ancient times height of ceiling used to go even upto 64 feets. This was done to give the necessary strength to space element or to balance the space element. Astrologically Jupiter controls the space element(Aakash tava), hence people with weak Jupiter should live in the houses with ceiling height of at least 12 feets.

2) Stairs should be constructed only in South or South west directions, these are the best directions for Stairs.Height of the stairs should not be more than half of the height of the ceiling. This is very important. Also Stairs should be constructed at an angle less than or equal to 45 degress. If the stairs are constructed on the angle more than that of 45 degrees then it leads to vastu dosh. Earthly element(prithvi atava) and space element(aakash tava) both gets negatively affected if the angle of stairs is more than that of 45 degrees.

3) Storage of food etc can be done in North west direction. Sun Moves from East to West (Morning to evening) thats a reason why this direction free is of drastic temperature changes. Hence at a constant temperatures food items remains fresh for a longer periods in North west.

4) The colors of the walls should not be dark, especially the colors of the walls of bedrooms. Dark colors give strength to negative forces, hence should be avoided.

5) All kinds of machines like washing machines, generators or geysers etc should be installed in South east direction, this direction is under the control of fiery element(Agni tatva)

6) People generally have big trees in their garden which are in East or North east direction which is wrong, you can only have small plants in these directions.

7) Center of your house should always be empty, heavy furniture, machines, stairs or pillars in the center of the house, could be the cause for health troubles for your family members.

8) Keep your house and locality clean.

9) Number of windows, doors and opening should always be minimum in South west or south directions, maximum number of windows or doors or openings should be there in the North, North east and east directions.

10) Toilets should never be adjacent to or in front of Kitchen or in east or north east directions

Avoid a property which has a door facing South West as it is the entry of the devil energy and brings in struggles and misfortunes. If the wealth energy as per advanced Feng Shui of that house is good, the occupant may prosper during initial 3-4 years. But then may face a down fall. If your house already has a door facing South West, fix 2 Hanumanji's tiles ( with the Gada in his left hand) outside the door & see the difference. Certain gems like Yellow Sapphire,Earth Crystals, Lead with the Expert's advice can also further reduce the severity of this defect. But it is always better to avoid such properties.
The door facing South East is said to be a door which brings in illness, anger and court matters. wo stickers of Gayatri Mantra should be fixed on both the sides of the door from outside. Use of gems like Coral, Yellow Sapphire etc. and copper with a proper advice will further reduce the defects of this door.
South facing door brings in sharp energy which disturbs positive energy field of the house. Door here means a highly active social life. Some times it may bring in arguments or disagreements. Again fixing two above mentioned Hanumanji's tiles outside the door will help. It can further be protected by using lead, cat's eye etc. But this door if it is in fourth Pada is very good for an occupant.
West facing door is also not bad for the youngsters as it has an active energy & energy of enjoyment. That is why in Japan, Geisha houses are always facing west.
North West facing door is not so bad. It can bring in health, wealth and prosperity if supported by other vastu rules. Only thing that the main male member of the house may remain out of the house for a longer time if the door faces west and a female if the door faces North.
Normally doors facing East, North, North East are said to be good doors. But again there are many other things like Cuts, Extensions, Under Ground Water Tanks, Feng Shui (Flying Stars Chart ) of the house which decide the wealth and health of the occupant. A few words on these topics some other time.

.- Always stand in the centre of your house with a compass in your hand to find out the directions of your house. The main entrance is the mouth of a house which brings in the energy. Avoid a property which has a door facing south-west, as it is the entry of the devil energy and brings in struggle and misfortunes. If your house already has one, fix two Hanumanji tiles outside the door and see the difference.
- Mandir or altar is the king of all Vastu rules — place it in the North-East and everything will start falling in place. Also, face the East while praying.
- Kitchen is the symbol of prosperity and should be ideally placed in the southeast. Kitchen in the North or North-East may bring financial and health problems. In this case, hang three bronze bowls upside down on the ceiling but do not hang over the stove.
- Master bedroom is the key to enter the door of stability and it must be in the South-West. You should sleep with your head in the South or West. But a breadwinner must never sleep in the North-East .
- Bathrooms and toilets have the energy of 'hell' which are best in West  or South. But should never be in North and North-East or they bring financial, health and educational problems.
- Centre is the nose of your house from where your house breathes. It must be open and clutter-free. A wall here gives stomach and financial problems so fix a zero watt blue bulb on this wall and keep it on 24x7 .
- Cuts in any direction make a house paralyzed, mainly cuts in South-West, North, North-East and South-East give serious problems. There are many mysteries and secrets regarding the cuts and their cures.
Now, a rapid-fire round of cures
- Never use too much of bright colours such as red and purple for decorating your house or they may enhance sickness energy in the house, if any.
- Do not keep pictures of water or a fountain in your bedroom. It might adversely affect you.
- Do not keep your mandir/temple under any beam or cupboard or you will be always under stress.
- Do not keep heavy objects in the North East and North or it may block your finances.
- Do not keep bonsais in the house or they will hamper the growth in the respective area of your life.
- Mopping the floor twice a week with sea salt water will help you clean your house of negative energy.
- If arguments are the main ruling energy in your house, play a musical CD four-five times in a day and experience the calmness in the house.

5 Tips to Attract Positive Energy into Your Home

thumbnail image
If you are moving into a new home or just updating your current space, consider setting up your place to attract more positive energy. Your choice of furnishings, accessories and their placement can have a huge impact on the energy within your home. Your home should be your sanctuary where you can feel nurtured, energized and fulfilled.
An ancient Chinese practice known as feng shui delves into the arrangement of your home in order to bring in good “Chi” or energy into your space. Loosely based on feng shui concepts, here are five tips to consider for bringing positive energy into your home.

1. Space

Space is an important concept to think about. It doesn’t matter whether your home is large or small or even if you live in a tiny room! To bring more positive energy into any size space be sure it is well organized and free of clutter. Consider what is really essential and what can be discarded or given to charity.
Your home should be your sanctuary where you can feel nurtured, energized and fulfilled.
Freeing up clutter paves the way for good energy to flow within the home. Space doesn’t necessarily mean “sparse.” The key is to get rid of things that don’t belong since they represent stagnant energy which can become negative and weigh you down at home.

2. Lighting

Proper lighting and air quality can also influence the energy in your home. Be sure to open your blinds to include as much natural light as possible in each area. Darkness slows down vibrations within a space and even causes feelings of depression. If natural lighting is a challenge try searching for some “natural light” or “full spectrum” light bulbs or LED lights.

3. Air Quality

Air quality is also important. Make sure air filters are changed regularly in heating and air conditioning systems. You may also want to invest in an air purifier. Green houseplants are nature’s air purifiers and have some great bonuses.
They add beauty to your environment and they are living things with their own energy fields. That’s a double boost of positivity! Also think about adding some aromatherapy or incense. Sage, light floral and citrus scents work best.

4. Color

Color choices play a big role in your home’s energy. Black, while stylish can actually attract and hold negative energy if used in too large a quantity. You don’t need to get rid of your black items, just be sure to balance them out with other bright and cheerful colors.
White is one of the best colors to attract positive energy. If you think of white light, it actually contains all the colors of the rainbow when seen through a prism. This makes the color white very powerful indeed!
A word of caution, too much white can feel overwhelming so be sure to balance it out with some other colors. Earth tone colors are especially nice to bring in some grounding and centering energy. Green plants can help with this too in addition to cleansing the air!
The major colors of the rainbow can also help with positive vibrations in the home. Each color has unique aspects, so including more of that color in your home can help draw that energy in.

Here is a quick rundown just to get an idea:

Reds

are great for romance and action, but too much can invite anger.

Oranges

suggest warmth and enthusiasm, but too much can cause restlessness.

Yellows

invite joy and inspiration, but too much can cause feelings of uncertainty.

Greens

are healing and nurturing, but overdoing green can induce laziness.

Blues

are calming and peaceful, but too much blue (particularly deep blue or indigo) can attract depressive energy.

Purples

are good for inspiration and luxury. Violet in particular is good for healing and manifesting. Too many purples or violets can call in serious and even sorrowful energy. No matter what colors are used in your décor, be sure to strive for balance.

5. Furniture and Accessories

Selecting furniture and accessories can also influence the energy in your home. To keep it positive, choose pieces that you love. If shopping vintage or second hand, be sure to energetically cleanse your pieces.
Burn some sage around these items, use a liquid sage spray or leave your possessions in the sunlight for a few hours if possible. You don’t want old or foreign energy in your space. Even if items are new, consider doing this to set the intention of positive energy for you and your home.
Item placement is also a factor in attracting positive energy. Try to avoid clutter and overcrowding furniture and accessories. They need some room so energy can flow. This goes back to the idea of space. Also be mindful of the colors you select for furniture and accessories. Lastly, think about adding mirrors to open up an area and reflect that good energy coming into your home.
A lot more can be said about inviting positive energy into your home but these tips will help get you started. Strive for a happy balance and have fun decorating!

Ancient sculpture of aztec goddess Mictecacihuatl

Ancient sculpture of aztec goddess Mictecacihuatl
Could it be a form of Bhairavi? We can see both hands in TYPICAL Hindu-Buddhist Mudra.
Known as the Mistress of Bones and the Lady of the Dead, she is the Queen of Mictlan, the Aztec Underworld, who still presides over today’s Day of the Dead rituals. Sometimes known now as La Huesuda, she brings peace and joy to the spirits of the deceased, and blesses the living who do honor to those who have passed before them.
