Delusions: why they seem real

The University of Adelaide    New research from the University of Adelaide has delved into the reasons why some people are unable to break free of their delusions, despite overwhelming evidence explaining the delusion isn't real.
In a new paper published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, University of Adelaide philosopher Professor Philip Gerrans says dreams and delusions have a common link – they are associated with faulty "reality testing" in the brain's higher order cognitive systems.
"Normally this 'reality testing' in the brain monitors a 'story telling' system which generates a narrative of people's experience," Professor Gerrans says.
"A simple example of normal reality testing is the person who gets a headache, immediately thinks they might have a brain tumour, then dismisses that thought and moves on.  Their story episode 'I might have brain cancer' gets tested and quickly rejected.
"In someone who has problems with reality testing, that story might persist and may even be elaborated and translated into action.  Such people can experience immense mental health difficulties, even to the point of becoming a threat to themselves or to others," he says.
In his paper, Professor Gerrans discusses delusions triggered by feelings of familiarity and unfamiliarity, such as the "Capgras delusion" – the delusion of "doubles".  One example is of a man who, after serious head injury following a motor vehicle accident, returned home from the hospital after a year only to state repeatedly that his family had been replaced by impostors.
"His family looked familiar but didn’t feel familiar, and the story in his head made sense of that feeling.  It didn't matter how much people tried to point out that his family was the same, in his mind they had been completely replaced by impostors," Professor Gerrans says.
He says in the "Fregoli delusion", people think they're being followed by a familiar person in disguise as a way of coping with a feeling of familiarity evoked by seeing a stranger.
"People also experience feelings of familiarity and unfamiliarity in déjà vu – a sense that a new place is strangely familiar, and the reverse, jamais vu – a sense of extreme unfamiliarity evoked by a familiar place.  However, such feelings do not lead to delusion in people whose reality testing is intact."
Professor Gerrans says better understanding this reality testing system could help to improve outcomes for people living with such difficulties.
"Trying to treat someone experiencing these delusions by telling them the truth is not necessarily going to help, so new strategies need to be developed to assist them.  Ultimately, that's the aim of this work – to help explain the nature of reality testing in order to help people find a way of working through or around their delusions so that the delusions no longer adversely affect their lives."
Professor Gerrans's new book, The Measure of Madness. Philosophy and Cognitive Neuropsychiatry (MIT Press), will be published this year.
What's the difference between a dream, a delusion and an hallucination?  Professor Gerrans explains:
Dream: The images, sensations and thoughts we experience during sleep.  In dreams we simply have experiences, we don't have beliefs about experience because "reality testing" systems are not active.
Delusion: An irrational belief at odds with reality maintained in the face of obvious contrary evidence and logical argument.
Hallucination: The apparent perception of an object not actually present.
Déjà vu: The feeling that you have previously experienced a situation which is in fact unfamiliar.  Caused by an erroneous "sense of familiarity".
Jamais vu: The feeling that a familiar situation has not been experienced before.  Caused by fleeting loss of the "sense of familiarity".
Reality Testing: The ability to determine whether a thought or perception accurately represents reality.  Largely absent in dreams, compromised in delusion.

Stopping cancer cells

By awakening the immune system's ability to kill mutated cells, researchers think they have found a way to prevent the spread of cancer cells.

An international research team has found a way to awaken the immune system's ability to kill spreading cancer cells.

The key finding published in Nature is that the spread of cancer cells can be markedly reduced by targeting the biochemical activity of TAM receptors.

The finding came from studying natural killer cells, a type of blood cell that can induce the death of cancer cells.

Co-author, Research Professor Wally Langdon from The University of Western Australia School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine said it was found that mice without healthy versions of another protein called Cbl-b had natural killer cells that had a heightened ability to prevent the spread of cancer cells.

"It was then discovered that the Cbl-b protein regulates the activity of TAM receptors, and therefore the anti-cancer effect seen in Cbl-b mutant mice might be mediated through its effects on TAM receptors," Professor Langdon said.

To test this possibility the team developed a new drug, a highly selective TAM inhibitor that blocked the receptors. It was found that treating mice with the TAM inhibitor significantly reduced the spread of melanoma and breast cancer cells.

"These findings reveal that a drug such as the TAM inhibitor can awaken the immune system's ability to kill spreading cancer cells, therefore providing an additional approach to enhance cancer treatment," Professor Langdon said.

Men's brains has a lot of space for handling the analytical process. They can analyze and find the solution for a process and design a map of a building easily. But If a complex map is viewed by women, they can not understand it. Women can not understand the details of a map easily, For them it is just a dump of lines on a paper.

4. CAR DRIVING.
While driving a car, mans analytical spaces are used in his brain. He can drive a car fast as possible. If he sees an object at long distance, immediately his brain classifies the object (bus or van or car) direction and speed of the object and he drives accordingly. Where woman take a long time to recognize the object direction/ speed. Mans single process mind stops the audio in the car (if any), then concentrates only on driving.

5. LYING
When men lie to women face to face, they get caught easily. Woman's super natural brain observes facial expression 70%, body language 20% and words coming from the mouth 10%. Men's brain does not have this. Women easily lie to men face to face.
So guys, do not lie face to face.

6. PROBLEMS SOLVING
If a man have a lot of problems, his brain clearly classifies the problems and puts them in individual rooms in the brain and then finds the solution one by one. You can see many guys looking at the sky for a long time. If a woman has a lot of problems, her brain can not classify the problems. she wants some one to hear that. After telling everything to a person she goes happily to bed. She does not worry about the problems being solved or not.

7. WHAT THEY WANT
Men want status, success, solutions, big process, etc... But Women want relationship, friends, family, etc...

8. UNHAPPINESS
If women are unhappy with their relations, they can not concentrate on their work. If men are unhappy with their work, they can not concentrate on the relations.

9. SPEECH
Women use indirect language in speech. But Men use direct language.

10. HANDLING EMOTION

செங்கதிர்கள் இருளின் வயற்றைப் பிளந்தெறிந்ததால் அடிவானம் தோய்ந்து செந்நிறமாகக் காட்சி தந்தது.

 மணி ஆறரை!

 கந்தசாமி புரண்டு படுத்தான். அவன் கொஞ்சம் முன்னதாகவே எழுந்துவிடுவதால் அவனுடைய வீட்டில் ஏதாவது புதுமையாக நடந்துவிடப் போகிறதா? தலையைத் தூக்கி ஒரு நோட்டம் விட்டான். அடுப்புப் புகைந்து கொண்டிருந்தது, கோப்பியாக்கும்.

 தங்கம் வாசற்படியில் உட்கார்ந்து தங்களது மூன்றாவது 'படைப்பை' மடியில் வைத்து தலைவாரிக் கொண்டிருந்தாள். கழுதை கெட்ட கேட்டுக்கு குஞ்சம் ஒன்றுதான் குறைச்சல்.

 கந்தசாமி வலது பக்கமாகத் திரும்பிப்படுத்தான். கன்னம் 'சில்'லென்று இருந்தது, தலையணை ஈரம்! ஆமாம் இனி அவன் வடிப்பதற்குக் கண்ணீரே இல்லை, எல்லாவற்றையும் வடித்துவிட்டான். சாட்சி நனைந்துபோன அந்தத் தலையணை. இனி அவன் வணங்குவதற்குத் தெய்வமே இல்லை, எல்லா 'தெய்வங்களையும் வணங்கிவிட்டான். சான்று, நைந்துபோன அவனுடைய உள்ளம். இனி அவன் சிந்தித்துப் பார்க்க ஒரு வழியுமே இல்லை. எல்லா வழிகளிலும் சிந்தனையைச் செலுத்திப் பார்த்துவிட்டான். ஆதாரம், தனது சிந்தனா சக்தியை பற்றி அவனுக்கு இருந்த நல்லெண்ணம்.

 அவனுடைய ஐந்தாவது சிருஷ;டி தவிழ்ந்து வந்து அவனுடைய கால் கட்டை விரலைக் கடித்து, முளைத்து வரும் பல்லின் பலத்தைக் காட்டியது. கந்தசாமி குழந்தையைத் தூக்கி தனது பக்கத்தில் படுக்க வைத்தான். பாயின் முரட்டுப்புல் குழந்தையின் முதுகுப் புண்ணை உராஞ்சியதால் அது வீறிட்டுக் கத்தியது. குழந்தையைத் தூக்கி தன் நெஞ்சில் உட்கார வைத்துவிட்டு சிந்தித்தான். நல்ல வேளை, சிந்திப்பதற்கு பணம் கொடுக்க வேண்டிய நிர்ப்பந்தம் இல்லாமல் இருந்ததே.

 குழந்தையின் உடல் எல்லாம் கிரந்திப் புண். பிறந்த ஊராக இருந்தால் அளவெட்டிப் பரியார் இருக்கவே இருக்கிறார். இங்கு கொழும்பில்? ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு கொண்டு போக அவனுக்கு நேரமில்லை. நேரமிருந்தாலும் மருந்துக்கும் பத்தியத்திற்கும் சத்துள்ள உணவிற்கும் மற்றது இல்லை – பணம்!

 'வேலைக்கு போகவில்லையா? மணி ஏழாகி விட்டது' என்று சொல்லிக் கொண்டுவந்த தங்கம் கோப்பியை அவனுக்கு அருகில் வைத்தாள்.

 'போக வேண்டியதுதான்' என்று எழுந்த கந்தசாமி அவளைப் பார்த்துச் சிரித்தான். அவன் சிரித்தது உள்ளம் பொங்கிய களிப்பினால் அல்ல – வெள்ளம் தலைக்குமேல் போய்விட்டதாம் இனி அழுதென்ன சிரித்தென்ன என்ற நினைவினால். அந்தச் சிரிப்பு அவனையும் அவளையும் ஏமாற்றிவிட்டு தன்னுயிரை மாய்த்துக் கொண்டது.

 கந்தசாமி காலைக் கடன்களை முடித்துக் கொண்டு வந்து வெற்றி முரசு கொட்டும் மூன்றாவது வாரமாக அந்தக் காற்சட்டையை அணிந்து கொண்டான்.

 'விரைவில் இன்னொரு காற்சட்டை தைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்' என்று வழக்கம்போல அன்றும் எண்ணிக் கொண்டான். அந்த எண்ணத்தை அடித்துப் புரட்டி விழுத்தி விட்டு பாய்ந்தது ஒரு பெருமூச்சு.

 வேலைக்கு போகிறவராச்சே என்று சதம் சதமாகப் பொறுக்கி தங்கம் வாங்கி வைத்திருந்த மூன்று தோசைகளையும் பிள்ளை பரிவாரத்திற்கு பகிர்ந்தளித்து விட்டுப் பிதாவாகப் புறப்பட்டான் கந்தசாமி.

 தாழ்வாரத்தில் ஒட்டிக்கொண்டிருந்த, யுத்த காலத்தில் பலத்த பந்தோபஸ்துடன் ஈழத்திரு நாட்டிற்கு வந்து சேர்ந்த வாகனத்தை – சைக்கிளை, வெளியே இழுத்து அதன் முதுகை – ஆசனத்தை சுற்றி ஒரு 'கிளிப்'பைக் கொழுவி விட்டான், காற்சட்டை சைக்கிளில் மாட்டிக் கொள்ளக்கூடாது என்பது ஊரறிந்த காரணம், அவன் மட்டிலும் தெரிந்த சில பல காரணங்களும் இருக்கலாம்.

 தங்கம் வாசலில் வந்து நின்றாள்.

 கந்தசாமிக்கு விசயம் விளங்கிவிட்டது.

 'கணவன்மார்;களே! நீங்கள் வெளியே புறப்படும் சமயமாக வாசலில் குறுக்கே வந்து நின்று உங்கள் மனைவியர் ஒரு புன்னயையை வலுக்கட்டாயமாக உங்கள் பால் விட்டெறிந்தால் அடுத்து வர இருக்கும் ஒரு பேராபத்திற்கு முகம் கொடுக்கத் தயாராகுங்கள். அவர்களைத் தொட்டுத் தாலி கட்டிய அந்தப் பழைய கணக்கைக் கூட்டிப் பார்த்து ஆறுதலடையுங்கள். மிஞ்சி மிஞ்சிப் போனாலும் அவர்களுடைய கோரிக்கை ஒரு புடவையாகவோ ஒரு புன்னகையாகவோதான் இருக்கும். 'ஆகட்டும்' என்று சொல்லி வைத்தால் போதும் வாக்கைக் காப்பாற்ற வேண்டிய அவசியம் இல்லை. கண்ணீர்க் குண்டுகளுக்குப் பயந்து உங்கள் பலவீனத்தை வெளிப்படுத்தாமல் தைரியமாக நடந்துவிட்டால் உங்கள் வர்க்கத்தினரின் மானத்தைக் காத்த பெருமையைப் பெறவீர்கள்.'

 'தங்கம்..........!' கந்தசாமி சிரமப்பட்டு ஒரு சிரிப்பை இழுத்துவந்து தன் முகத்தில் மேயவிட்டான். 'எங்கள் நிலைதான் உனக்குத் தெரியுமே. கடன்காரரால் பகல் நேரத்தில் வீPட்டுக்கு வரவே முடியவில்லை. பொறுத்ததோடு இன்னும் ஒருமாதம் பொறுத்துக் கொண்டால் நீ கேட்ட சேலையை வாங்கி விடலாம்.'

 தங்கத்தின் முகத்தில் எந்தவிதமான உணர்ச்சியின் பிரதிபலிப்பும் தெரியவில்லை, பெண்ணல்லவா?

 'அதுவும்போக', கந்தசாமியே தொடர்ந்தான். 'மற்றவர்கள், வசதியுள்ளவர்கள் ஆடம்பரமாகத்தான் வாழ்வார்கள். அதைப் பார்த்து நாமும் ஆசைப்பட்டால் முடியுமா? பிள்ளைகளுக்கே உருப்படியான சட்டை எதுவும் இல்லை. உன்னை இந்தக் கோலத்தில் காண்பதில் எனக்கு மட்டும் திருப்தியா, என்ன? என்னவோ கெட்டகாலம் சேலையை அடுத்த மாதம் வாங்கிக் கொள்ளலாம். 'ம்' என்று சொல்லு நான் நிம்மதியாக வேலைக்குப் போய் வரலாம்.' கந்தசாமி நிறுத்தினான்.

 'உங்களுக்கு எப்பொழுதுதான் இந்தப் பஞ்சப்பாடு தொலையைப் போகிறதோ தெரியாது. வருஷம் பன்னிரண்டுமாதம் உங்களுக்குத்தான் கொள்ளையும் கோதாரியும். இனிமேல் உங்களை ஒன்றும் கேட்காமல் தெருவால் போகிறவன் வருகிறவனை சேலை வாங்கித் தரச் சொல்லிக் கேட்கட்டுமா?'

 'நீயுமா தங்கம்?' என்றான், 'சீஷர்' பாணியில் அவனுடைய முகத்தில் பரிதாபம் இடம்பிடிக்க அகத்தில் வேதனை குடி புகுந்தது.

 'நீயுமா நிலைமை தெரிந்த நீயுமா என்னை வதைக்கிறாய்?' என்றவன் தன் கண்களில் ஜென்மம் பெறும் முத்துகளை மனைவி கவனித்துவிடக் கூடாது என்று சைக்கிளில் ஏறி வேகமாக மிதித்தான்.

 'அவளும் தான் எத்தனை காலத்திற்குப் பொறுப்பாள்? என்னுடைய தங்கம் தங்கமானவள்.'

 கந்தசாமியை – கந்தசாமியையா – தாங்க முடியாமல் அந்தப் பழைய சைக்கிள் நெழிந்தது. பின் சில்லு ஒன்பதாவது கம்பியையும் முறித்து பின்னரும் சாமகீதம் பணிவுடன் பாடலுற்றது. கந்தசாமி திருவுளம் இரங்கி சைக்கிளை விட்டு இறங்கி அதைத் தள்ளிக் கொண்டு நடந்தான்.

 கந்தசாமிக்கு முன்;னால் போய்க்கொண்டிருந்த ஒருவன் தனது காற்சட்டைப் பையில் கையைவிட்டு கைக்குட்டையை வெளியே எடுத்தான். அதோடு ஒரு மடிந்த காகிதமும் சேர்ந்து வந்து தெருவில் விழுந்தது.

 'ஐயா..........!' என்று குரல் கொடுத்த படி கந்தசாமி அதை எடுத்து விரித்தான். அது ஒரு நூறு ரூபாய் நோட்டு. அதற்கிடையில் உரியவன் தெரு மூலையில் திரும்பிவிடவே கந்தசாமி நோட்டை ஆகாய வெளியில் பிடித்துப் பார்த்தான். சந்தேகமில்லை. அது ஒரு கள்ள நோட்டு!

 நேர்மை, வேண்டாமென்றது.

 வறுமை, வேண்டுமென்றது.

 உள்ளத்தில் ஒரு மின்னல்!

 '.......... வருஷம் பன்னிரண்டு மாதமும் உங்களக்குத்தான் கொள்ளையும் கோதாரியும்.......... வருஷம் பன்னிரண்டு மாதமும் உங்களுக்குத்தான் கொள்ளையும் கோதாரியும்...... வருஷம் பன்......'

 கந்தசாமி நடந்தனான். எதிரே ஒரு பொலிஸ்காரன் வந்தான். கந்தசாமியை ஏதோ ஒன்று எச்சரிக்கை செய்தது. அந்தக் கள்ளநோட்டை எட்டாக மடித்து சட்டைப்பை அடியில் போட்டுக் கொண்டு குனிந்தபடி நடந்தான். பொலீஸ்காரன் போய்விட்டான்.
 கந்தசாமி மேலும் நடந்தான். எதிரே அவனுக்கு கடன் கொடுத்த ஒருவன் வந்தான். கந்தசாமி பயந்துபோய்;, சைக்கிளை தெருவோரத்தில் நிறுத்திவிட்டு ஒரு சந்தில் நுளைந்து மறைந்து கொண்டான்.

 பொலீஸ்காரனைக் கண்டு கள்ள நோட்டை மறைந்த கந்தசாமி கடன்காரனைக் கண்டு தன்னையே மறைத்துக் கொண்டான். ஏன், கந்தசாமியும் அந்தச் சமுதாயத்தில் ஒரு 'ஒரு கள்ள நோட்டு'த் தானா? அவனைப் போன்றோர் மனிதரோடு மனிதனாக வெளிப்படையாக வாழவே முடியாதா?

 இங்கு கந்தசாமியைப் பற்றியும் ஒரு வார்த்தை குறிப்பிட வேண்டும். அவன் நடுத்தர வகுப்பில் வந்து விடிந்தவன் - ஒரு குமாஸ்தா!

 வழக்கம் போல அலுவலகத்தில் ஒரு கட்டுப்பணத்தையும் அதற்குரிய பத்திரங்களையும் ஒப்புக் கொண்டான் கந்தசாமி. அந்தப் பதினாயிரம் ரூபாவையும் வங்கியில் கொண்டுபோய் கட்டிவிட்டு வர வேண்டும். அவனுடைய உள்ளத்தில் ஒரு மெல்லிய கீறல் விழுந்து துடித்தது. அவனுக்குச் சிந்திக்க நேரமில்லை. மனைவியிடமும் மற்றவர்களிடமும் மதிப்பாக வாழ வேண்டுமென்றால் பொய்யும் புரட்டும் செய்யத்தான் வேண்டுமென்று எண்ணியதோடு துணியவும் செய்தான்.

 அந்தக் கள்ள நோட்டை எடுத்து அதில் அடையாளமாக ஒரு சிலுவைக் குறியைப் போட்டு அதை நோட்டுக் கட்டுக்கு நடுவில் திணித்தான். ஒரு நல்ல நோட்டை எடுத்து தாம் வைத்துக் கொண்டு நடந்தான்.

 ஐயோ, அந்த அரைமணி நேரமாக அவனுடைய மனம் துடித்த துடிப்பு! ஏதாவது விபரீதமாக நடந்து விட்டால் நாளைக்கு தங்கத்தின் கதி....? பிள்ளைகளின் நிலை...? 'தங்கத்தின் மீது ஆணை! இனிமேல் இந்த வேலையை நான் செய்யவே மாட்டேன்' என்று எண்ணியவனாய் வங்கிப் படிகளில் இறங்கினான் - கையில் நல்ல நோட்டுடன்!

 அந்த ஒருநாளாவது அவனுடைய குடும்பத்தை இன்பமாக இருக்க வைப்போம் என்ற நினைவு போலும், கடைத்தெருவில் இறங்கினான் கந்தசாமி.

 எல்லோருக்கும் வரிசையாக உடுப்பு வாங்கினான். நல்ல உணவுப் பொருட்களை தேடி வாங்கினான். தங்கத்திற்கு ஒரு 'கிலிட்' சங்கிலி. தனக்கொரு ஜப்பான் பேனா. மூத்ததுக்கொரு றிப்பன். இளையதிற்கு ஒரு கிலுகிலுப்பை - இன்னும் எத்தனையோ! கடைக்காரனுக்கு ஒன்றேகால் ரூபா கடன் வேறு வைத்துவிட்டுத் திரும்பினான் கந்தசாமி.

 அன்றிரவு கந்தசாமி சாவதானமாக இருந்து கூப்பன் கடைக்கு இவ்வளவு, காய்கறி கடைக்கு இவ்வளவு என்று எதிர்வரும் சம்பளப் பணத்திற்கு பங்கீட்டுக் கணக்கு போட்டுக் கொண்டிருந்தான். அன்றைக்கு குளித்து முழுகி வயிறார உண்டதால் பிள்ளைகள் எல்லோரும் உறங்கிவிட்டனர்.

 தங்கம் வெற்றிலையை மடித்து கந்தசாமியின் வாயில் வைத்துவிட்டுச் சிரித்தாள். பல நாட்களுக்குப் பிறகு அவளுடைய விழிகள் அவனை –

 'ஏன் சிரிக்கிறாய்?' என்று அவளுடைய கன்னத்தைக் கிள்ளப் போனான் கந்தசாமி.

 'ஆமாம். இன்றைக்கு இவ்வளவு பணம் ஏது?' என்று தங்கம் கேட்டாள்.

 கந்தசாமி அவளிடம் பொய் சொல்லவில்லை. உண்மையையும் சொல்லிவிடவில்லை. சிரித்து மழுப்பினான். பேச்சை வேறு துறைக்கு மாற்றினான்.

 'இன்றைக்கு நீ மிகவும் அழகாக இருக்கிறாய்' என்று கொஞ்சினான்.

 'போங்க....!' என்று அவள் கடைக்கண்ணால் அவனை நோக்கினாள். அவன் அவளை இழுத்து தன் மடியில் படுக்க வைத்தான். அவள் நெளிந்தாள்.

 விடிந்தது.

 'அவசரப்படாமல் நன்றாகச் சுகம் வந்ததும் வேலைக்கு வா. இது இந்த மாதச் சம்பளம். உனக்கு நெருக்கடியாக இருக்குமென்று இருபத்தைந்து ரூபா மேலதிகமாக வைத்திருக்கிறேன். அதை அடுத்த மாதச் சம்பளத்தில் பிடித்துக்கொள்ளலாம்' என்று சொல்லி ஒரு உறையை தங்கத்திடம் கொடுத்தார்.

The World’s Largest Solar Plant is Frying Birds

The world’s largest solar power plant, the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, officially opened for business a few days ago, but not all environmentalists are happy about it. The plant consists of 350,000 mirrors spread across 5 square miles, and it works by concentrating sunlight to boil water in a series of enormous towers hooked up to steam generators. However, that incredible amount of heat does more than just generate power; it also fries any birds flying over the plant.

This has been a known side effect of this type of solar plant from the start, and it’s a concern that may keep similar projects from being approved in the US. The air above the plant can reach temperatures up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (537 Celsius), and the reflective surface of the mirrors resembles a lake, which biologists say could end up luring birds to their deaths.

The way the plant scorches birds is horrifying, but the California Energy Commission believes the loss of wildlife — about eleven birds a month — is worth paying for 140,000 sustainably-powered homes. While any loss of life is upsetting, it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the number of birds killed by other forms of human infrastructure: an estimated minimum of 300 million birds a year are killed simply by colliding into buildings. Even domesticated cats kill far greater numbers of birds each year. And other forms of clean energy can be just as problematic as the tower solar plants, with wind turbines killing at least 10,000 birds a year (some bald eagles ).

No power-generating system that harms wildlife is ideal, but this type of solar plant is still vastly less harmful to birds than the alternatives. After all, coal-fired plants harm more than a handful of birds each month — they release greenhouse gasses and toxic pollutants, warming the planet and making people and animals near the plants ill. Unlike a nuclear power plant, the catastrophic failure of a solar plant won’t leave the surrounding area tainted with radioactivity for decades or centuries to come. The Ivanpah plant will likely remain controversial due to the bird death toll, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s far less damaging to the environment than the other energy sources we’re already using.

Ancient Arabs regard for Hindustan

Another indifference to the expansion of Islam into India may well have been the approval of Indian faith by the Prophet himself, who is reported to have once said: "I get cool breezes from the side of Hind."

In Sahih Muslim, Abu Horaira says that the Prophet mentioned certain rivers as belonging to heaven and one of them was a river of India. Two Indians, Sarmanak and Ratan, who collected the Prophet's sayings, Al Rataniyab, are reported to have visited Arabia during his time. Many Islamic traditions support the high standing of Indian culture with the Arabs: Ibni Ali Hatim relates on Ali's authority that the Valley of Hind where Adam descended from Heaven, and the Valley of Mecca, which had the tradition of Abraham, were the best valleys in the world."
