ஒரு குடும்பத்தை சார்ந்த இறந்து போன முன்னோர்கள், தம் குடும்பத்தினரின் வம்சம் செழிக்க அருள் தரட்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் இறைவன், ஆடி மாதத்தில் முன்னோர்களின் ஆத்மாக்களை பூமிக்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கிறார் என்கிறது புராணம்.

ஆடி அமாவாசையில் குடும்பத்தின் முன்னோர்களுக்கு திதி கொடுப்பதும் புண்ணியத்தை அளிக்கும்.

காய்கறிகளை தானம் தர வேண்டும். அதில் முக்கியமாக பூசணிக்காயை தானம் செய்தே ஆக வேண்டும். அப்படி செய்வதால் துஷ்டசக்திகள் விலகும். தடைப்பட்ட சுபகாரியங்கள் நடை பெற வழி பிறக்கும்.

படங்கள் இருந்தால் அதற்கு துளசிமாலையோ அல்லது துளசி இலையோ சமர்ப்பிக்க வேண்டும்.
இறந்தவர்களின் புகைப்படம் இல்லாதவர்கள் முகம் பார்க்கும் கண்ணாடியை வைத்து வணங்கலாம். நாம் பூஜையில் வைக்கும் முகம் பார்க்கம் கண்ணாடியில் பித்ருக்கள் தங்கள் முகத்தை பார்த்து மகிழ்சியடைவார்கள். தங்களின் புகைப்படத்தை வைத்துதான் வணங்குகிறார்கள் என்று எண்ணுவார்கள். அதனால்தான் முகம் பார்க்கும் கண்ணாடியை அமாவாசை, பித்ருக்கள் திதி அன்று வைத்து வணங்கலாம் என்று சாஸ்திரம் சொல்கிறது.

அத்துடன் முன்னோர்களுக்கு பிடித்த உணவை படைத்து வணங்க வேண்டும். அந்த உணவை காக்கைக்கு வைத்த பிறகே நாம் சாப்பிட வேண்டும்.
முதியவர்களுக்கு உணவு தானம் செய்வது நல்லது.

அப்படி செய்வதாலும் முன்னோர்களின் ஆத்மா சாந்தியாகும்.

முன்னோர்களின் மனவருத்தத்தை அடைந்த குடும்பத்தை இறைவனாலும் காப்பாற்ற முடியாது என்கிறது சாஸ்திரம்.

அதனால்தான் பகீரதன் பெறும் முயற்சி எடுத்து கங்கையை பூமிக்கு வரவழைத்து தம் முன்னோர்களை சாந்தப்படுத்தினான். நாமும் நம்மால் இயன்ற எளிய தர்பணம் செய்து முன்னோர்களின் அருளாசி பெற்று சிறப்பான வாழ்வை பெறுவோம்.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is a transparent horseshoe-shaped cantilever bridge and tourist attraction in Arizona near the Colorado River on the edge of a side canyon in the Grand Canyon West area of the main canyon. USGS topographic maps show the elevation at the Skywalk's location as 4,770 ft (1,450 m) and the elevation of the Colorado River in the base of the canyon as 1,160 ft (350 m), and they show that the height of the precisely vertical drop directly under the skywalk is between 500 ft (150 m) and 800 ft (240 m).

Commissioned and owned by the Hualapai Indian tribe, it was unveiled March 20, 2007, and opened to the general public on March 28, 2007. It is accessed via the Grand Canyon West Airport terminal or a 120-mile (190 km) drive from Las Vegas, which includes a 10-mile (16 km) stretch of dirt road which is currently under development. The Skywalk is east of Meadview and north of Peach Springs with Kingman being the closest major city.

Cell 'glue' provides cancer insight

Image: BeholdingEye/iStockphoto University of Queensland researchers have discovered an important step in how proteins glue cells together to form healthy tissues, a process that is often disturbed in diseases such as cancer and inflammation. Professor Alpha Yap, Dr Aparna Ratheesh and Dr Guillermo Gomez from UQ's Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) led a team that discovered the signals that prompt proteins to build the "glue" that binds cells into tissues. “Cells are the basic building blocks of our body,” Professor Yap said. “Healthy tissues require their component cells to recognise and adhere to one another. “This adhesion is achieved through specialised bundles of proteins whose formation is promoted by a signalling protein called Rho. "You can think of this signal like the conductor of an orchestra, making sure that all the players work together.” Professor Yap and his team studied Rho and discovered a network of proteins that ensure Rho is activated at the correct time. “Many of the proteins in this network have been implicated in cancer, meaning this discovery will provide valuable insights into how healthy tissues are disturbed in disease,” Professor Yap said. It follows the Yap laboratory's 2010 and 2011 discoveries of how adhesion proteins come unstuck inappropriately. The study is published in the current edition of the international scientific journal Nature Cell Biology.  This work was financially supported by the Human Frontiers Science Program, the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, the Australian Research Council, and the Oncology Children's Foundation. Stem cells aid cancer understanding

Image: Henrik5000/iStockphoto An international team of researchers led by renowned stem cell scientist Professor Martin Pera has discovered a novel marker that plays a vital role in understanding how cancer develops in the liver, pancreas and oesophagus.  The study, published in the journal Stem Cell, adds to our understanding of the role of stem and next-stage progenitor cells in tissue regeneration and cancer diagnosis and treatment. While stem cells are known to reside in organs such as the liver and pancreas, they are difficult to isolate. The new findings show that an antibody the team developed can capture the stem cells. Professor Pera, program leader for Stem Cells Australia and Chair of Stem Cell Sciences at the University of Melbourne, said the antibody was able to detect progenitor cells in disease states such as cirrhosis of the liver, and in cancers such as pancreatic adenocarcinoma and oesophageal carcinoma.  “By being able to identify these cells, we hope to learn more about their role in tissue regeneration and in cancer especially in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer,” he said. “Cancers of the liver, pancreas and oesophagus are often very difficult to detect and challenging to treat.”  The large collaboration of scientists from around the world working on this study evolved over many years with research undertaken in Professor Pera’s laboratories at the then Australian Stem Cell Centre and at the University of Southern California Professor Pera and one of the co-authors on the paper, Dr Kouichi Hasegawa, were recently awarded an Australia-India Strategic Research Fund grant to continue their search for novel markers for liver, pancreatic and gut stem cells. Dr Hasegawa, who recently undertook a three month sabbatical at Stem Cells Australia, holds positions at Kyoto University’s Institute for Integrated Cell-Materials Sciences and at the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bangalore, India. “This funding will support us to develop more antibodies that can be used to assist in the identification and prospective isolation of stem and progenitor cells in these tissues and lead to the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic reagents,” said Professor Pera.
