BEAUTY OF GUJARAT .WONDERFUL CARVING AND RICH ARCHEOLOGY LETS KNOW ABOUT GIRNAR JAIN TEMPLES.

Girnar is one of the holiest places in Gujarat, situated near Junagadh at a distance of 327 from Ahmedabad. It is a sacred place and an essential pilgrimage for both Hindus and Jains. There are several temples located here, which have converted it into a township of temples. Amidst the lush green Gir Forest, the mountain range serves as the hub of religious activity. Apart from this, there is a mosque attracting many Muslim pilgrims to the place. This has made Girnar a perfect example of unity in diversity in India.

The summit has been an important religious place since the 3rd century. Girnar temples present a right blend of art, religion and devotion. The sculptural art used in these temples is outstanding. They have stood the test the time and the cruelty of various invaders. Despite that, the art forms of the temples still retain their magnificence. The Jain temples at Girnar attract devotees of both Shwetambar and Digambar sects of Jainism. The Neminath Temple is the main attraction of Girnar. It was built during 1128 AD to 1159 AD.

According to Jain religious beliefs, Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankar became an ascetic after he saw the slaughter of animals for food on his wedding. He renounced all worldly pleasures and came to Mount Girnar to attain salvation. Here, Bhagwan Neminath reached the highest state of enlightenment, Keval Gyan and Moksha, after great austerities. His bride-to-be also followed his path and founded the 'Sandhvi Sangh', the organisation of women ascetics. The rectangular Neminath temple is the most significant here.

Vedic influence in Korea

• The name Korea is derived from the Sanskrit word Gauriya, which became Goriya before it was changed to Korea. Changing the "G" sound to the "K"or"C" sound can also be recognized in the Sanskrit word Gau which changes in English to "Cow".
• Gouri is the Vedic goddess and of Lord Shiva. She was the principal deity of this region, so consequently the country was named after her.
• In 48 AD, Queen Suro or Princess Heo Hwang-ok is said to have made a journey from Lord Ram's birthplace to Korea by sea, carrying a stone which calmed the waters. The stone is not found anywhere in Korea and is now a part of crucial evidence that the princess belonged to the city of Ayodhya in India. "This stone is only found in India, proof that it came from there to Korea,"
• Korean historians believe that Queen Huh was a princess of an ancient kingdom in Ayodhya. She went to Korea some two-thousand years ago and started the Karak dynasty by marrying a local king, Suro.

Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke) ::

Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) or stroke is a medical emergency condition in which the brain cells suddenly die because of a lack of oxygen. A stroke can be caused by an obstruction in the blood flow, or the rupture of an artery that feeds the brain. The patient may suddenly lose the ability to speak, there may be memory problems, or one side of the body can become paralyzed.
Types
The two main types of stroke include ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke.
1. Ischemic stroke :
Ischemic stroke accounts for about 87 percent of all strokes and occurs when a blood clot, or thrombus, forms that blocks blood flow to part of the brain.
If a blood clot forms somewhere in the body and breaks off to become free-floating, it is called an embolus. This wandering clot may be carried through the bloodstream to the brain where it can cause ischemic stroke.
2. Hemorrhagic stroke :
A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel on the brain's surface ruptures and fills the space between the brain and skull with blood (subarachnoid hemorrhage) or when a defective artery in the brain bursts and fills the surrounding tissue with blood (cerebral hemorrhage).

Both types of stroke result in a lack of blood flow to the brain and a buildup of blood that puts too much pressure on the brain.
Risk Factors
Risk factors for stroke include the following :
1. Age - as you get older your risk increases
2. Being male
3. High blood pressure
4. A family history of stroke
5. High cholesterol
6. Smoking
7. Diabetes
8. Obesity and overweight
9. A previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
10. High levels of homocysteine (an amino acid in blood)\
11. Divorced men have a higher risk of stroke.
Signs and Symptoms
Stroke symptoms typically start suddenly, over seconds to minutes, and in most cases do not progress further. The symptoms depend on the area of the brain affected. The more extensive the area of brain affected, the more functions that are likely to be lost. Some forms of stroke can cause additional symptoms. For example, in intracranial hemorrhage, the affected area may compress other structures. Most forms of stroke are not associated with headache, apart from subarachnoid hemorrhage and cerebral venous thrombosis and occasionally intracerebral hemorrhage.

CALCULATING THE REQUIRED QUANTITIES OF MATERIAL FOR CONCRETE

Quantity of material required for the production of required quantity of concrete of given mix proportions can be calculated by absolute volume method.
Volume method is based on the principle that the volume of fully compacted concrete is equal to the absolute volume of all the materials of concrete, that is cement, fine aggregate (sand) , coarse aggregates and water.
SOURCE

Formula to calculate the desired quantity of materials is:

Vc: Absolute volume of fully compacted fresh concrete
W: Mass of water
C: Mass of cement
Fa: Mass of fine aggregates
Ca: Mass of coarse aggregates
Sc, Sfa and Sca are the specific gravities of cement, fine aggregates and coarse aggregates respectively.
*AIR CONTENT IS IGNORED IN CALCULATION
This method of calculation for quantity of material for concrete takes into account the mix proportions from design mix or nominal mixes for structural strength and durability requirement.

FOR EXAMPLE:
Consider concrete with mix proportion of 1:1.5:3 where, 1 is part of cement, 1.5 is part of fine aggregates and 3 is part of coarse aggregates of maximum size of 20 mm. The water cement ratio required for mixing of concrete is taken as 0.40
Assuming bulk densities of materials as follows:
Cement = 1500 kg/m3
Sand = 1700 kg/m3
Coarse aggregates = 1650 kg/m3
Specific gravities of concrete materials are as follows:
Cement = 3.15
Sand = 2.6
Coarse aggregates = 2.6.
The percentage of entrained air assumed is 2%.

The mix proportion of 1:1.5:3 by dry volume of materials can be expressed in terms of masses as:

Cement = 1 x 1500 = 1500
Sand = 1.5 x 1700 = 2550
Coarse aggregate = 3 x 1650 = 4950.
RATIO OF MASSES WITH RESPECT TO CEMENT:
Water cement ratio= 0.40
ABSOLUTE VOLUME OF CONCRETE FOR 50 KG (1  BAG) OF CEMENT:
CALCULATING THE REQUIRED QUANTITIES OF MATERIAL FOR CONCRETE
THEREFORE FROM ONE BAG OF CEMENT (50 KG) 0.13202 m3 OF CONCRETE CAN BE MADE.

FOR 1m3 OF CONCRETE 2% AIR IS ENTRAINED.
ACTUAL VOLUME OF CONCRETE= 1-0.02= 0.98m3

QUANTITY OF CEMENT REQUIRED FOR 1m3 OF CONCRETE= 0.98/0.13202=7.42 BAGS OF CEMENT
=7.42* 50 Kg
=371 Kg

Weight of fine aggregate (sand)= 1.5* 371=556.5 Kg
Weight of coarse aggregate =3* 371=1113 Kg

Changes in your blood can reveal cancer 13 years before it develops

A new study has shown that there are tiny genetic changes happening in our cells more than a decade before cancer is diagnosed, and they can be detected through a simple blood test.
The research found that there are changes in the length of our telomeres - the protective caps at the end of our chromosomes that shrink as we age - which can predict cancer up to 13 years before symptoms develop, and they could help us to detect and fight the disease in its earliest stages.

This is the first study to progressively monitor telomere changes in people over a long period of time, and it shows that there's a unique pattern in telomere length that predicts who will go on to develop the disease.
"Understanding this pattern of telomere growth may mean it can be a predictive biomarker for cancer," the study's lead author, Lifang Hou from Northwestern University in the US, said in a press release. "Because we saw a strong relationship in the pattern across a wide variety of cancers, with the right testing these procedures could be used to eventually diagnose a wide variety of cancers."
Researchers have been trying to understand the link between telomere length and cancer for years, but have so far struggled to come up with a consistent result.
To investigate further, the team followed 792 seemingly healthy people between 1999 and 2012. By the end of the study, 135 of these participants were diagnosed with a range of cancers, including prostate, skin, lung and leukaemia. Looking back over their records, the researchers found that they could tell which would go on to develop cancer just by looking at the pattern of changes in their blood cell telomere length, which is considered a marker of biological age.
From the very start of the study, the telomeres of those who would go on to be diagnosed with cancer shrank far more rapidly, which means they were ageing faster than those who weren't developing cancer. In fact the telomeres of the future cancer-patients looked as much as 15 years older than those of their peers.
But this accelerated ageing process stopped three to four years before the cancer was diagnosed, which could explain why previous research has struggled to find a clear link between telomere length and cancer diagnosis.
The results also provide important insight into how cancer hijacks our cells. As part of the natural ageing process, each time our cells divide, our telomeres shrink. After a certain number of cellular divisions, the telomeres become so short that cells become inactive or self-destruct, while being replaced with younger, healthier cells. But it's now apparent that cancer has found a way to get around that safeguard in order to make our cells replicate uncontrollably.
"We saw the inflection point at which rapid telomere shortening stabilises," said Hou. "We found cancer has hijacked the telomere shortening in order to flourish in the body." The team's results have been published in the journal EBioMedicine.
The next step is for researchers to find a reliable way to detect this pattern of changes in telomere length. If we can achieve this, we may be able to detect signs of cancer before it ever has a chance to replicate unchecked in our body. And we don't want to get too ahead of ourselves, but that could really be a turning point in the war against cancer. Bring it on.

Audi Synthesizes Diesel From Carbon Dioxide and Water

Maybe EVs aren't inevitable after all. Audi, together with the German energy company Sunfire, has announced that it is able to synthesize diesel from water and CO2, and that the product can fuel automobiles.
The process involves heating water to 800 degrees Celsius, creating steam. Electricity—from a green-energy power source, naturally, biomass in this case—heats the water, and the resulting high-temperature electrolysis breaks it down into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen is released, and the hydrogen is combined with CO2 taken from the atmosphere. Under high heat and pressure, the two synthesize to create a liquid known as blue crude. The blue crude is refined into what Audi calls e-diesel.

Soul Ages: "The World According to Michael"

Soul age refers to how a person has grown from experience on the planet, not just to how many lifetimes he or she has lived.
No person, essence or entity is "ahead" or "behind" any other, but is simply occupying another place in the continuous circle leading to and from the Tao.
Ways of being are supposed to be different in different developmental stages; at some point we experience it all, moving continually along to different levels of understanding and responsibility. Michael always emphasizes that while each stage is unique and manifestly distinct from the others, no one place is better or worse than any other; they all belong in this game we have chosen to play.

Retro-Tech Flywheel Helps You Pedal Your Bike To Tomorrow

15-Pound, Retro-Tech Flywheel Helps You Pedal Your Bike To Tomorrow

A 22-year-old inventor combines two old technologies into a bicycle that saves energy when it brakes and can then accelerate without pedaling.
The technology of a flywheel is simple and old: Use energy to spin up a wheel very quickly. Later, you can take that spinning energy and use it for something else. But you normally think of flywheels as enormous steel monstrosities spinning in factories. But 22-year-old inventor Maxwell von Stein's new bike employs a small flywheel to boost his speed and take a load off his legs while pedaling: When braking, the biker simply shifts gears and allows the energy to transfer from the back wheel to the flywheel (instead of transferring uselessly to the brake pads). Once the rider wants to accelerate again, he simply shifts the gear and the flywheel transfers that power back to the bike, sending the cyclist on his merry way.
The wheel weighs 15 pounds, so you certainly need the extra help it provides to keep moving. But, as the simple flywheel makes a comeback in all sorts of applications, Stein's invention shows that even the bicycle can get a boost from the the technology. Just don't reach down looking for your water bottle. You're liable to lose a finger.

Researchers identify potential cause of schizophrenic symptoms

Unusual neural oscillations -- brain waves -- have long been associated with schizophrenia. The oscillations, called delta waves, are similar to slow oscillations seen in normal brains during sleep, but in schizophrenic brains, they occur during wakefulness. The connection between these oscillations and schizophrenic symptoms, particularly cognitive deficits such as memory impairment, has long been unclear.
When the delta frequency light was turned on in the brain egion called thalamus, researchers observed disruption in the working memory of rats. When it was turned off, the rodents were once again able to perform working memory tasks.
"The oscillations produce an artificial signal that jams normal communication," author says. "The part of the thalamus that is supposed to carry information about working memory couldn't do the task at all with these sleep-like delta waves. We suspect the abnormal delta oscillations seen in patients with schizophrenia are producing a similar jamming of normal signals."
Delta waves require a specific type of ion channel called a T-type calcium channel. These channels are of particular interest because they are one of the few types of ion channel implicated in schizophrenia by genetic studies. The next step, author says, is to figure out what kind of agents could be used to block these channels.

Netherlands recently became the 1st country to open a solar road for public use.

The world’s first solar bike lane is soon to be available for use in the Netherlands! The bike path that connects the Amsterdam suburbs of Krommenie and Wormerveer is a 70-meter stretch of solar-powered roadway set to open for the public on November 12th, 2014.
The new solar road, which costs €3m (AUD$4.3m), was created as the first step in a project that the local government hopes will see the path being extended to 100 metres by 2016.
More complimentary plans are also on the table as the country intends to power everything from traffic lights to electric cars using solar panels.
