Image : The Roses of Heliogabalus is an 1888 painting by the Anglo-Dutch artist Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema depicting the young Roman emperor Elagabalus hosting a banquet.

The painting depicts a (probably invented) episode in the life of the Roman emperor Elagabalus, also known as Heliogabalus (204–222), taken from the Augustan History. Although the Latin refers to "violets and other flowers", Alma-Tadema depicts Elagabalus smothering his unsuspecting guests with rose petals released from a false ceiling.

ஈழத் தமிழர் ஓவியம் என்ற சொல்லாடல் பலரும் மேலைத் தேய மரபுகளையும் முன்னிருந்த பல ஓவியர்களிடம் பயின்று அவர்கள் வழி பயணிக்கிறோம் என்ற முகவுரையுடன் அறிமுகமாகி தாங்கள் விரும்பியவர்களை பெரும் கலைஞர்கள் என கொண்டாடி கதையாடல்களை பரவ விட்டு பரவசப் படும் நிர்மலமான ஒரு ஓவிய உலகத்தை கட்டமைக்கும் காட்சிகளிடையே சுதந்திரமான கலைஞனாக நமக்கு அறிமுகமாகிறான் நம் கோபி ரமணன்.

மட்டக்களப்பு பெரிய உப்போடையில் ஒரு சாதாரண குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்து இன்று உலக அளவில் பேசப்படும் கலைஞனாக மாறியிருக்கிறான்.

நான் மட்டக்களப்பில் இருந்த காலை எங்கள் பக்கத்து வீடு அவன் சிறுவனாக விளையாடித் திரிந்த அவன் பொழுதுகளை எண்ணிப் பார்க்கிறேன்.என் மகளை விட ஒன்றிரண்டு வயது மூத்தவன் அவன் தன் பருவத்து பிள்ளைகளுடன் வீதிகளில் அவன் ஓடியாடிய காலங்களில் உலகம் போற்றும் கலைஞனாக வெளி வருவான் என நினைத்துருக்கவில்லை.

தானே தனக்குள் உருவான ஓவியன் தான் வாழும் கலாசார சூழலையும் பண்பாட்டையும் விளங்கிக் கொண்ட கலைஞனாக இன்று நம் கண் முன் நிற்கிறான் அவன்.

Matthieu Paley(Born: 1973, France) is a freelance photographer based in Turkey, and a regular contributor to National Geographic. After a 3-year stint in New York, where he studied photography, Matthieu moved to Northern Pakistan in 1999. To this day, he remained in the area for over four years, trekking extensively throughout the mountainous regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan while working with his wife Mareile for various NGO's and actively participating in the development of this fairly unknown regions. Mareile is a successful communications consultant for the United Nations and a passionate Pilates instructor, leading retreats all over the world with her wellness company

Over the last 17 years, Matthieu’s passion for human nature has taken him worldwide. He likes to focus his camera on regions that are misrepresented or misunderstood.

Matthieu also uses video and writing to open people’s eyes on our common humanity. He has published several books of his work (on Afghanistan’s Pamir mountains, Mongolia, Siberia and on the Evolution of Diet) and his fine-art images have been shown in solo exhibitions worldwide.

Throughout his career, Matthieu has learned six languages, feeding his passion to connect with the people he meets and helping him to instill a sense of intimacy into his images.
