Bad food shrinks your brain

We know what junk food does to our weight, skin and energy levels, but now researchers have found it also shrinks our brain. A team from Deakin and the Australian National universities used magnetic resonance imaging to measure the hippocampi – the two parts of the brain used for learning and memory – in people aged 60 – 64. Those who regularly ate junk food had a smaller left hippocampi than people who ingested nutrient – dense foods, such as vegies, fruits and fish. “As the hippocampus is critical to learning and memory, this study underscores the importance of good nutrition for children, adolescents and adults”, study author associate professor Felice Jacka says.
