Megalithic site at Hirebenkal(Karnatak)

Dated: 800BCE
An unusual find is a stone kettledrum on a 10metres (33 ft) high
boulder. The boulder is hemispherical in shape with a diameter of 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) and standing 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) in height. The
boulder, when struck
with a wooden hammer, produces sounds which are heard up to 1 kilometre (0.62 mi)
away.
The setting for the
approximately 400 megalithic monuments convey the feeling of a ghost town. Their structures are varied in shape and size. There are clusters of dolmens, three sided chambers with capstones forming the roof. The small dolmens are 50–100 centimetres (20–39 in), while the larger ones measure up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) height. The buried and semi-buried dolmens are categorized as cists and dolmenoid cists, and are arranged in circular layouts. Most of them have collapsed. The dolmens with round portholes give the
appearance of dwellings with windows but they are funerary structures.
These dolmens flank both sides of the main
street. Pit circles and oblong chambers covered with gable stone roofs have also been found. The dolmenoid cists are in several shapes and sizes.
Those in an oblong
shape are discerned to have been built with packing of rubble stones at the ground level. A circular enclosure is
noted. Around these structures there is a pit filled with layers of earth. In rock
shelters, there are paintings of people dancing, hunting, and
holding weapons. There are also geometric and mystic designs of deer, peacocks, antelopes, humped bulls, horses and cows.
In this area, the caves were either residences or places of worship; they contained cave paintings in red ocher colour which corroborates the existences of the funerary structures nearby.

Sioux Indian Chiefs (Early 1900's)

KYA KYA Naa Paya BABA - Very Beautiful Song - BK Meditation

The Pamban Bridge

The Pamban Bridge is a cantilever bridge on the Palk Strait connects Rameswaram on Pamban Island to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the cantilever railway bridge, though primarily it means the latter. It was India's first sea bridge. It is the second longest sea bridge in India (after Bandra-Worli Sea Link) at a length of about 2.3 km. The rail bridge is for the most part, a conventional bridge resting on concrete piers, but has a double leaf bascule section midway, which can be raised to let ships and barges pass through.

SREENIVASO VIJAYATHE

Vaikom Mahadeva Temple

The Vaikom Mahadeva Temple is a temple for the Hindu god Shiva in Vaikom, Kerala. The temple, along with Ettumanoor Siva Temple, Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple is considered a powerful trisome. The belief is that if a devotee worships at these three temples before 'Ucha pooja', all the wishes are fulfilled. The Vaikom Mahadeva temple is one of the few temples which is held in reverence by both Shaivaites and the Vaishnavaites. Vaikom’s Shiva is fondly called Vaikkathappan. The Shiva Linga here is believed to be from the ‘Treta yuga’ and considered as one of the oldest temples in Kerala where pooja has not been broken since inception. —

New wind harvesting invention to bring cities to life

The University of Wollongong

Artist’s impression of how the invention could be installed on the sides of city buildings - the turbines can also be used in farms.

Is this what the cities of the future will look like? Towering skyscrapers fitted with softly rotating panelled windows that harness wind energy and convert it into electricity? It is if Professor Farzad Safaei has anything to do with it.
Professor Safaei, Director of UOW’s ICT Research Institute, and his team have invented a new kind of wind turbine with immense possibilities. Its unique design can be installed on the sides or tops of skyscrapers and large apartment buildings. It is also quieter, cheaper to run and safer than current wind turbines – it doesn’t have large rotating blades that might be dangerous for humans or birds.
PowerWINDows is the culmination of four years of work, and UOW has just signed an initial two-year deal with one of Australia’s leading engineering companies, Birdon, to build a commercially viable prototype to enable more extensive testing and evaluation in the hope that the product may one day be brought into production.
Professor Safaei says he started this line of research to overcome some of the key shortcomings of current wind turbine technology, in particular, to enable modular manufacturing, easier transportation and installation, and reduce noise and land usage footprint.
“I wanted to create a wind turbine that better integrated with living environments”, he says, adding that the invention “looks like a window with a sparse Venetian blind – the blades move vertically up and down.”
He says the invention can be easily blended into existing environments because of its window-like form, which can be painted to match buildings.
Director of Innovation & Commercialisation Research at UOW Elizabeth Eastland says to switch to renewable energy technologies to help cut greenhouse gas emissions and lessen the impact of fossil fuels shortages, we need to develop innovative but workable solutions.
“PowerWINDows has the potential to help us harvest wind energy in a much more effective way,” she says.
“We are pleased to have Birdon working with us to advance this technology.”
The Group General Manager of Birdon, Ian Ramsay, looks forward to working with UOW on this nationally significant project.
“We see this as an opportunity to apply our engineering expertise in the green energy area and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions whilst bringing to market a strong and viable commercial solution for the renewable energy sector.”

Size DOES matter to women

Still, images of three of the stimulus models illustrate the extremes in variation. At left: short stature, low shoulder: waist ratio, small penis. Right: tall stature, large shoulder: waist ratio, large penis. Centre: intermediate for all three traits.

A Monash University biologist was part of a national research team that has shed new light on how women take into account male body shape, height and size of genitalia to determine the sexual appeal of men.
The study was conducted by Dr Bob Wong from the School of Biological Sciences and researchers from The Australian National (ANU) and La Trobe University. Their findings were revealed today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science journal.
The researchers projected life-size, 3D computer-generated male bodies to 105 female participants with the images differing in height, body shape and penis size. They asked them to assess the figures’ sexual attractiveness.
The researchers found that penis size influenced how the female participants perceived attractiveness - and the more ample, the more appealing.
“There is always much debate on the subject and we wanted to address whether size matters using a valid scientific approach,” Dr Wong said.
“Our study altered several male body parts at once using used life-size, 3D figures to show for the first time that penis size has different effects on attractiveness depending on height and body shape.”
In line with popular belief, height and shoulder width were also influential, with women preferring taller men and men with broad shoulders and narrow hips - V-shaped, rather than pear-shaped.
“We found that penis size affected a man’s sexual attractiveness, but height was equally as important, with taller men considered more attractive,” Dr Wong said.
The study also reported that taller men with larger genitalia were considered more attractive than shorter men with larger genitalia.
Lead author of the study Dr Brian Mautz, from the ANU said an overall impression of attractiveness to women, without focusing on any particular body part is what distinguished the research from previous findings.
“The only previous study of this topic in humans used five small drawings of male figures that differed only in penis length. It was obvious to the female participants which character they were being asked to assess. In that situation, it’s easy for people to self-deceive or lie and distort the results,” Dr Mautz said.
Dr Wong said the results supported the theory that female mate choice could have driven the evolution of larger penis size in humans.
“Our results hint that humans might have larger penises because before humans wore clothes, females may have been more likely to mate with well-endowed males,” Dr Wong said.

New obesity, height genes found

Busselton residents and researchers from The University of Western Australia have helped a worldwide scientific collaboration identify new genes associated with height and obesity.
The discovery of four new loci (the specific place on a chromosome where a gene is located) affecting height and seven related to obesity is described in a paper published online in Nature Genetics.
The paper was authored by more than 300 researchers and is the result of a meta-analysis of dozens of studies around the world collating data from more than 263,000 individuals of European background.
UWA contributors included Research Assistant Professor Gemma Cadby of the Centre for Genetic Origins of Health and Disease, who provided analysis of height and weight data from the long-running Busselton Health Study.
Dr Cadby said the newly discovered genes represented further pieces in the puzzle as researchers sought to understand the genetic contributions to height and weight.
"They already know of some genes likely to affect height and weight, but these genes only explain a limited amount of the contribution of genetics to these traits," Dr Cadby said.  "So a lot of genes still need to be identified, but this is an important step.
"The ultimate goal for genetic studies is to further the understanding of human diseases and in doing so, to develop new treatments and ways of preventing disease.  Actually translating the results of studies such as this into providing intervention, management and treatments for people who are obese is a long way ahead, but in order to do those things you need to understand the genetics of the disease.  We have to get this bit of the puzzle before we can move to the next step."
Other UWA researchers involved in the paper - Genome-wide meta-analysis identifies 11 new loci for anthropometric traits and provides insights into genetic architecture - included Clinical Professor Bill Musk, of the School of Medicine and Pharmacology at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, and Adjunct Professor John Beilby of the School of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
The study was put together by the GIANT consortium - Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits.  It focused primarily on BMI (Body Mass Index), which is a major risk factor for multiple chronic diseases and of important public health significance, but also examined height and waist-hip ratio adjusted for BMI.

Painting by Alex Alemany,Valencia

Alex Alemany was born on January 5, 1943 in Gandia (Valencia). He studied Fine Arts between 1961 and 1966 at the “Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos” in Valencia. Francisco Lozano, Enrique Ginesta, Genaro Lahuerta and Felipe Mª Garin, among others, were his teachers.
n 1965 he traveled to Paris to expand studies with contemporary artists.
n 1966 he repeated this experience, prolonging their stay in France.
n 1968, Alex Alemany increased his studies in London at the National Portrait Gallery.Until 1970, he traveled abroad and experienced several pictorial trends, mainly abstract expressionism.
During these years of youth he embraced several avant-garde trends, plunging into the mainstream until he found a style of his own, increasingly more consistent with his sensitive poetic touch.
n 1970 he painted the first works which reverted to realism, intuitively and successfully perceiving the movement embraced and followed by other international artists, known as “Magic realism”. From 1975 to 1978 was settled in Madrid, alternating portraits with their work of surrealist trend.
Alex Alemany’s realism (and in some of his work, his hyper-realism) kept drifting towards an unmistakable style of his own resulting from personal introspection, gradually becoming more and more distant from the coldness of other realist concepts with a strong influence of photography as American realism was.Alemany’s work is the missing link between poetry and painting. Exploring his own sensations, feelings and concepts, he conveys them with the credibility of his precious technique, enabling us to participate in the climate of his painting, and to identify with the things he wants to tell us through his work, metaphoric poetry, subconscious images and oneiric world.

Denoting deep poetic content, the elements and shapes of his works are treated with “poetic licence” and the symbolism used is so subtle that it captures the viewer, stimulating his capacity to interpret.  This is work which can produce any effect, except indifference, and the language used contributes to a richer interpretation. His eclectic aspirations led him to sporadic incursions into other styles: formalistic compositions, social painting, expressionism, etc...
Through his work, we can find many portraits showing us his love for the human figure. Even in this difficult way of painting, Alex Alemany has been able to include the poetry of his work, giving the portrait not only the physical aspect of the human being but also the personality and the psychological profile, far from the “academic portrait”.
Among his portrait gallery, we can find Their Majesties, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofia, the King and Queen of Spain, and also H.R.H Felipe, Prince of Spain as well as other authorities.
Alex Alemany’s complete work belongs to private collectors, public institutions and museums. He has never participated in any contest or applied for painting prizes.
From 1993 to 2004 Alex Alemany was the president of the “The Fine Art Circle” and he was selected as a member of the “Real Academia de Cultura Valenciana” in October 1998.

Nowadays, he lives and works in Valencia.
