Stoicism

Stoicism originated as a Hellenistic philosophy, founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium (modern-day Cyprus), c. 300 B.C.E. It was influenced by Socrates and the Cynics, and it engaged in vigorous debates with the Skeptics, the Academics, and the Epicureans. The name comes from the Stoa Poikile, or painted porch, an open market in Athens where the original Stoics used to meet and teach philosophy. Stoicism moved to Rome where it flourished during the period of the Empire, alternatively being persecuted by Emperors who disliked it (for example, Vespasian and Domitian) and openly embraced by Emperors who attempted to live by it (most prominently Marcus Aurelius). It influenced Christianity, as well as a number of major philosophical figures throughout the ages (for example, Thomas More, Descartes, Spinoza), and in the early 21st century saw a revival as a practical philosophy associated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and similar approaches. Stoicism is a type of eudaimonic virtue ethics, asserting that the practice of virtue is both necessary and sufficient to achieve happiness (in the eudaimonic sense). However, the Stoics also recognized the existence of “indifference” (to eudaimonia) that could nevertheless be preferred (for example, health, wealth, education) or dispreferred (for example, sickness, poverty, ignorance), because they had (respectively, positive or negative) planning value with respect to the ability to practice virtue. Stoicism was very much a philosophy meant to be applied to everyday living, focused on ethics (understood as the study of how to live one’s life), which was in turn informed by what the Stoics called “physics” (nowadays, a combination of natural science and metaphysics) and what they called “logic” (a combination of modern logic, epistemology, philosophy of language, and cognitive science).

Sources of information on the Stoics

Since the Stoics stress the systematic nature of their philosophy, the ideal way to evaluate the Stoics’ distinctive ethical views would be to study them within the context of a full exposition of their philosophy. Here, however, we meet with the problem about the sources of our knowledge about Stoicism. We do not possess a single complete work by any of the first three heads of the Stoic school: the ‘founder,’ Zeno of Citium in Cyprus (344–262 BCE), Cleanthes (d. 232 BCE) or Chrysippus (d. ca. 206 BCE). Chrysippus was particularly prolific, composing over 165 works, but we have only fragments of his works. The only complete works by Stoic philosophers that we possess are those by writers of Imperial times, Seneca (4 BCE–65 CE), Epictetus (c. 55–135) and Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121–180) and these works are principally focused on ethics. They tend to belong on moral exhortation but give only clues to the theoretical bases of the moral system. For detailed information about the Old Stoa (i.e. the first three heads of the school and their pupils and associates), we have to depend on either doxographies, like pseudo-Plutarch Philosophers’ Opinions on Nature, Diogenes Laertius’ Lives of Eminent Philosophers (3rd c. CE), and Stobaeus’ Excerpts (5th c. CE) – and their sources Aetius (ca. 1st c. CE) and Arius Didymus (1st c. BCE–CE) – or other philosophers (or Christian apologists) who discuss the Stoics for their own purposes. Nearly all of the latter group are hostile witnesses. Among them are the Aristotelian commentator Alexander of Aphrodisias (late 2nd c. CE) who criticises the Stoics in On Mixture and On Fate, among other works; the Platonist Plutarch of Chaeronea (1st-2nd c. CE) who authored works such as On Stoic Self-Contradictions and Against the Stoics on Common Conceptions; the medical writer Galen (2nd c. CE), whose outlook is roughly Platonist; the Pyrrhonian sceptic, Sextus Empiricus (2nd c. CE); Plotinus (3rd c. CE); the Christian bishops Eusebius (3rd–4th c. CE) and Nemesius (ca. 400 CE); and the sixth-century Neoplatonist commentator on Aristotle, Simplicius. Another important source is Cicero (1st c. BCE). Though his own philosophical position derives from that of his teacher Philo of Larissa and the New Academy, he is not without sympathy for what he sees as the high moral tone of Stoicism. In works like his Academic BooksOn the Nature of the Gods, and On Ends he provides summaries in Latin, with critical discussion, of the views of the major Hellenistic schools of thought.

From these sources, scholars have attempted to piece together a picture of the content, and in some cases, the development of Stoic doctrine. In some areas, there is a fair bit of consensus about what the Stoics thought and we can even attach names to some particular innovations. However, in other areas, the proper interpretation of our meagre evidence is hotly contested. Until recently, non-specialists have been largely excluded from the debate because many important sources were not translated into modern languages. Fragments of Stoic works and testimonial in their original Greek and Latin were collected into a three-volume set in 1903–5 by H. von Arnim, Stoicorum Veterum Fragmenta. In writings on the ‘old’ Stoics, fragments and testimonia are often referred to by von Arnim’s volume numbers and text numeration; e.g. SVF I.345=Diogenes Laertius, Lives 4.40. In 1987, A. A. Long and David Sedley brought out The Hellenistic Philosophers (LS) which contains in its first volume English translations and commentary of many important texts on Stoics, Epicureans and Skeptics. In 1988 Long and Sedley was followed by a collection of primary texts edited by B. Inwood and L. P. Gerson entitled Hellenistic Philosophy. Unless otherwise specifically noted, I refer in what follows to texts by or about Stoics using the author’s name followed by Long and Sedley’s notation for the text. For example, ‘Aetius, 26A’ refers to section 26 of Aetius’s work, text A (unless otherwise noted, I use their translation, sometimes slightly altered). The Inwood and Gerson collection translates many of the same texts, but unlike LS does not chop them up into smaller bits classified by topic. Each approach has its merits, but the LS collection better serves the needs of an encyclopedia entry. For French translation of Chrysippus, see Dufour (2004). For a German translation of the early Stoa, see Nickel (2009).

New method to detect early-stage cancer identified.

New method to detect early-stage cancer identified.
A new method to detect cancer in its early stages using a targeted MRI contrast agent that binds to proteins has been identified by a team of researchers led.
In their study, published in the journal Science Advances, the authors describe a newly identified biomarker for the detection of liver metastases. With current tests like biopsies, cancer in the liver is often detected in advanced stages, which can limit treatment options and lower overall survival rates. The discovery could have wide-ranging impacts, including more effective diagnosis and precision treatment, and less risk to patients.
Using MRI technology, contrast agents carry the element gadolinium to enhance the images. During her previous work analyzing calcium, Yang decided to test how a metal, like gadolinium, would interact with protein.
The protein wraps around the element and carries it to the site for imaging. Yang’s team found that protein design is much more effective in targeting the signs of disease.

“Currently, it is difficult to see early stages of disease in the liver, even in invasive biopsy,” said Yang. “Diagnostic testing using this contrast agent can not only identify the presence of disease but differentiate the stages of disease with high sensitivity and accuracy. That’s the beauty of this work.”

What is the WBC (white blood cell) count

A white blood cell (WBC) count is a test that measures the number of white blood cells in your body. This test is often included with a complete blood count (CBC). The term “white blood cell count” is also used more generally to refer to the number of white blood cells in your body.

There are several types of white blood cells, and your blood usually contains a percentage of each type. Sometimes, however, your white blood cell count can fall or rise out of the healthy range.

Purpose of a WBC count
Having a higher or lower number of WBCs than normal may indicate an underlying condition.

A WBC count can detect hidden infections within your body and alert doctors to undiagnosed medical conditions, such as autoimmune diseases, immune deficiencies, and blood disorders.

This test also helps doctors monitor the effectiveness of chemotherapy or radiation treatment in people with cancer.

Types of WBCs
WBCs, also called leukocytes, are an important part of the immune system. These cells help fight infections by attacking bacteria, viruses, and germs that invade the body.

White blood cells originate in the bone marrow but circulate throughout the bloodstream. There are several different types of white blood cells, each with varying responsibilities:

  • Lymphocytes: These are vital for producing antibodies that help the body to defend itself against bacteria, viruses, and other threats.
  • Neutrophils: These are powerful white blood cells that destroy bacteria and fungi.
  • Basophils: These alert the body to infections by secreting chemicals into the bloodstream, mostly to combat allergies.
  • Eosinophils: These are responsible for destroying parasites and cancer cells, and they are part of an allergic response
  • Monocytes: These are responsible for attacking and breaking down germs or bacteria that enter the body.

A normal WBC count
Infants are often born with much higher numbers of WBCs, which gradually even out as they age.

According to the University of Rochester Medical Center (UMRC), these are the normal ranges of WBCs per microliter of blood (mcL):

Age range                                  WBC count (per mcL of blood)
newborns                                             9,000 to 30,000
children under 2                               6,200 to 17,000
children over 2 and adults            5,000 to 10,000
These normal ranges can vary by lab. Another common measurement for the volume of blood is cubic millimetre or mm3. A microliter and cubic millimetre equal the same amount.

The types of cells that make up WBCs usually fall within a normal percentage of your overall WBC count.

The normal percentages of the types of WBCs in your overall count are usually in these ranges, according to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS):

Type of WBC      Normal percentage of overall WBC count
Neutrophil           55 to 73 per cent
Lymphocyte        20 to 40 per cent
Eosinophil           1 to 4 per cent
Monocyte           2 to 8 per cent
Basophil               0.5 to 1 per cent

Higher or lower numbers of WBCs than normal can be a sign of an underlying condition.

Having a higher or lower percentage of a certain type of WBC can also be a sign of an underlying condition.

If levels of one particular type of white blood cell increase, this may be due to a specific trigger.

  • Monocytes: High levels of monocytes may indicate the presence of chronic infection, an autoimmune or blood disorder, cancer, or other medical conditions.
  • Lymphocytes: If there is an elevation in the level of lymphocytes, the condition is known as lymphocytic leukocytosis. This may occur as a result of a virus or an infection, such as tuberculosis. It may also be linked to specific lymphomas and leukaemias.
  • Neutrophils: Increased levels of neutrophils in their body lead to a physical state known as neutrophilic leukocytosis. This condition is a normal immune response to an event, such as infection, injury, inflammation, some medications, and certain types of leukaemia.
  • Basophils: Rising levels of basophils may occur in people with a history of underactive thyroid disease, known as hypothyroidism, or as a result of certain other medical conditions.
  • Eosinophils: If a person registers high levels of eosinophils, the body might be reacting to a parasitic infection, allergen, or asthma.

Symptoms of an abnormal WBC count
The symptoms of a low WBC count include:

body aches
fever
chills
headaches

High WBC counts don’t often cause symptoms, although the underlying conditions causing the high count may cause their own symptoms.

The symptoms of a low WBC count may prompt your doctor to recommend a WBC count. It’s also normal for doctors to order a CBC and check your WBC count during an annual physical examination.

What to expect from a WBC count
A healthcare provider or lab technician needs to draw blood to check your WBC count. This blood sample is taken either from a vein in your arm or a vein on the back of your hand. It only takes a couple of minutes to draw your blood, and you may experience minor discomfort.

The healthcare provider first cleans the needle site to kill any germs and then ties an elastic band around the upper section of your arm. This elastic band helps the blood fill your vein, making it easier for the blood to be drawn.

The healthcare provider slowly inserts a needle into your arm or hand and collects the blood in an attached tube. The provider then removes the elastic band from around your arm and slowly removes the needle. Finally, the technician applies gauze to the needle site to stop the bleeding.

Healthcare providers use a different technique when drawing blood from young children and infants: Providers first puncture the skin with a lancet (a pricking needle), and then use a test strip or a small vial to collect the blood.

Results are sent to a lab for review.

Complications from a WBC count
Having your blood drawn is a simple procedure, and complications are extremely rare.

It can be difficult to take blood from people with small veins. The lab technician may be unable to locate a vein, or once the needle is inside the arm or hand, they may have to move the needle around in order to draw blood. This can cause a sharp pain or a stinging sensation.

Rare complications include:

infection at the needle site
excessive bleeding
lightheadedness or fainting
bleeding underneath the skin (hematoma)
How to prepare for a WBC count
A WBC count requires no specific preparation. You simply schedule an appointment with your doctor or set up an appointment at a local medical laboratory.

Certain medications can interfere with your lab results and either lower or increase your WBC count. The drugs that may affect your test results include:

corticosteroids
quinidine
heparin
clozapine
antibiotics
antihistamines
diuretics
anticonvulsants
sulfonamides
chemotherapy medication
Prior to having your blood drawn, tell your doctor about all prescription and nonprescription medications that you’re currently taking.

Understanding the results of a WBC count
Abnormal test results are classified by numbers that are higher or lower than the normal range for your age.

A low or high WBC count can point to a blood disorder or other medical condition. To identify the exact cause of a high or low WBC count, your doctor will take several factors into consideration, such as your list of current medications, symptoms, and medical history.

Leukopenia is the medical term used to describe a low WBC count. A low number can be triggered by:

HIV
autoimmune disorders
bone marrow disorders or damage
lymphoma
severe infections
liver and spleen diseases
lupus
radiation therapy
some medications, such as antibiotics
Leukocytosis is the medical term used to describe a high WBC count. This can be triggered by:

smoking
infections such as tuberculosis
tumours in the bone marrow
leukaemia
inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis and bowel disease
stress
exercise
tissue damage
pregnancy
allergies
asthma
some medications, such as corticosteroids
After diagnosing the cause of a high or low WBC count and recommending a treatment plan, your doctor will periodically recheck your WBCs.

If your WBC count remains high or low, this can indicate that your condition has worsened. Your doctor may adjust your treatment.

If your WBC count shows a normal range, this usually indicates that the treatment is working.

Q&A: Increasing your WBC count
Q:
Are there any foods I can eat that will help increase my WBC count?

A:
No specific foods or diet is proven through research to increase the production of white blood cells.

It’s important to include a good source of protein in your diet, as amino acids found in protein, are needed to build WBCs.

Vitamins B-12 and folate are also needed to produce WBCs, so consider adding a multivitamin and mineral supplement daily. Though not proven, some believe that adding vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, garlic, selenium, and even spicy foods to your diet can boost the immune system.

If you’re being treated for cancer or other causes of leukocytosis, talk to your doctor before taking any supplements, as they might interfere with treatments.

The genetic origins of schizophrenia

An introduction to Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a mental disease, a group of psychotic disorders that interfere with thinking and responsiveness. It is a disease of the brain, like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. A person with schizophrenia has deteriorated occupational, interpersonal, and self-supportive abilities. Schizophrenia is known as one of the most disabling and emotionally devastating illnesses among mankind. But this disease has been misunderstood for so long that it has received relatively little attention and its victims have been undeservingly stigmatized. Schizophrenia is not a split personality, a common idea about what schizophrenia is, but it is a rare and very different disorder usually common among young people.
The word schizophrenia comes from Greek origins “schizein” and “frenos” meaning split mind. (Wikipedia contributors. “Schizophrenia.” Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia.)

Studies on the genetics of schizophrenia show that schizophrenia has a genetic component. While in general population its lifetime prevalence is %1, the risk of schizophrenia is higher in relatives of schizophrenic patients. Third-degree relatives (e.g. cousins) share their %12.5 genes and carry a %2 risk for schizophrenia. Second-degree relatives (e.g. half brothers) share their %25 genes and carry %6 risk for schizophrenia. Many First degree relatives (e.g. siblings, fraternal twins) share their %50 and carry %9 risk for disease.
But schizophrenia does not imply a split minded personality instead it describes a person who believes two different reality at the same time. While a normal person can only be able to believe in one reality, a schizophrenic person can adopt a second reality which can not be understood by a man in mental health. Genetics constitute a crucial risk factor to schizophrenia. In the last decade, molecular genetic research has produced novel findings, infusing optimism about discovering the biological roots of schizophrenia. However, the complexity of the object of inquiry makes it almost impossible for non-specialists in genetics (e.g., many clinicians and researchers) to get a proper understanding and appreciation of the genetic findings and their limitations. This study aims at facilitating such an understanding by providing a brief overview of some of the central methods and findings in schizophrenia genetics, from its historical origins to its current status, and also by addressing some limitations and challenges that confront this field of research. In short, the genetic architecture of schizophrenia has proven to be highly complex, heterogeneous and polygenic. The disease risk is constituted by numerous common genetic variants of only very small individual effect and by rare, highly penetrant genetic variants of larger effects. In spite of recent advances in molecular genetics, our knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of schizophrenia and the genotype-environment interactions remain limited.

The first genetic analysis of schizophrenia in an ancestral African population, the South African Xhosa, appears in the journal Science. The study was carried out in the Xhosa population because Africa is the birthplace of all humans, yet ancestral African populations have rarely been the focus of genetics research (There is no evidence that the Xhosa have an unusually high risk of schizophrenia).
The researchers analyzed blood samples collected from 909 individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and 917 controls living in South Africa. Their study revealed that participants with schizophrenia are significantly more likely to carry rare, damaging genetic mutations compared to participants without schizophrenia.
These rare mutations were also more likely to affect the brain and synaptic function. Synapses coordinate the communication between brain nerve cells called neurons; the organization and firing of neuronal synapses are ultimately responsible for learning, memory, and brain function.
