Plastic Fuel (Plastic to oil refining known as pyrolysis )

Plastic Fuel
All around the globe companies and individuals are starting to produce fuel from waste plastic. As only 8% of waste plastic is recycled in the U.S., 15% in Western Europe, and much less in developing countries, this reuse of plastic could potentially keep enormous amounts of plastic out of landfills and out of the oceans. Over 500 billion pounds of new plastic is manufactured each year and roughly 33% of that is single use and thrown away. As so little plastic is recycled, we need to reframe plastic waste as an underused resource vs landfill destined. If all plastic waste made it into the landfill, it would surely be mined in the future, but currently all plastic waste does not make it into our landfills. The United Nations estimates plastic accounts for four-fifths of the accumulated garbage in the world's oceans. We need to stop polluting our oceans with plastic before it is too late, and start collecting all plastics suitable for this new fairly simple technology, a technology that is available now. The technology is not overly complicated, plastics are shredded and then heated in an oxygen-free chamber (known as pyrolysis) to about 400 degrees celsius. As the plastics boil, gas is separated out and often reused to fuel the machine itself. The fuel is then distilled and filtered. Because the entire process takes place inside a vacuum and the plastic is melted - not burned, minimal to no resultant toxins are released into the air, as all the gases and or sludge are reused to fuel the machine. - See more at: http://www.inspirationgreen.com/plastic-waste-as-fuel.html#sthash.CnDtN5TN.dpuf

How does the brain determine what matters?

THE INSULA and the SALIENCE NETWORK

: How does the brain determine what matters?

How does the brain determine what matters? According to a new scientific article, a brain structure called the insula is essential for selecting things out of the environment that are "salient" for an individual, and dysfunction of this system is linked to brain disorders such as autism, psychosis and dementia.
The SALIENCE NETWORK and the various aspect of the INSULA which is a key part of it are increasingly being found to be operative just about "everywhere" in an interesting balance with the DEFAULT MODE NETWORK, somehow directing or orchestrating our attention to what needs to be done and away from our internal processes.
In psychology and neuroscience, the term "salient" is used to describe a thing, person, place or event that stands out, or that is set apart from others.
First described by Greicius and Seeley in 2007, the salience network is thought to be central in prepping the brain for action, such as when a driver must respond to someone darting across the road or a student readies herself for a pop quiz. An object or event is salient if it is significant to an individual. The signals can come from inside the body, such as pain or hunger, or outside, such as the sound of a distant siren while driving in traffic.
http://www.wired.com/2013/12/the-will-to-persevere/
The findings show that the insular cortex is a complex and multi-purpose structure that can be separated into, at least, three separate regions with distinct functions. Specific subdivisions of the insular cortex, along with other cortical and subcortical regions, form a "salience network." Compromises to the integrity of this network can contribute to deficits in attention and affect, as well as social and cognitive processes.
In healthy people, the Default Mode Network and the Salience network appear to be tightly coupled. The default network is active when a person daydreams — but when something outside, such as an ambulance siren, pierces that sense of reflection, the salience network takes over. “It’s activated when you have to get rid of that internal focus and figure out what’s happening around you,” “To understand what’s going on, we need to think about how they work together.”
If you have to think about tiny regions of the brain all doing something different, it’s very hard to make sense of how activity fits together globally,” said David Sharp, a neurologist at the National Institute for Health Research in London who did the study described further below.
"We are constantly bombarded with stimuli from the environment that place demands on our attention," said author of the article. "The function of one of the insular cortex subdivisions is crucial for orchestrating activity in other brain regions that are important for guiding attention,"
See Also: Saliency, switching, attention and control: a network model of insula function. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20512370
“Our brain is constantly bombarded by sensory information, and we have to score all that information in terms of how personally relevant it is for guiding our behavior,” said Seeley, a neurologist at the University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in a new study. “The more salient something is, the more it captures our drive system, which directs behavior.”
In a rare study involving direct brain stimulation, Michael Greicius, a neurologist at Stanford University, and collaborators say they have uncovered direct evidence that a brain region known as the anterior midcingulate cortex and its surrounding network play a central role in motivation and a readiness to act.
The theory had been based on indirect data — until now. “It was a fortuitous opportunity, providing a rare piece of data that we can’t get from any other setting,” Greicius said. “It’s nice to have a human lend this first-person insight into what it feels like to have your salience network stimulated.
raise tantalizing questions about how differences in the network from one individual to the next contribute to differences in our ability to overcome challenges and cope with stress.
If you have to think about tiny regions of the brain all doing something different, it’s very hard to make sense of how activity fits together globally,” said David Sharp, a neurologist at the National Institute for Health Research in London.
brain is constantly bombarded by stimuli, and the relative salience of these inputs determines which are more likely to capture attention. A brain system known as the 'salience network', with key nodes in the insular cortices, has a central role in the detection of behaviourally relevant stimuli and the coordination of neural resources. Emerging evidence suggests that atypical engagement of specific subdivisions of the insula within the salience network is a feature of many neuropsychiatric disorders
At least part of the salience network’s role seems to be linked to something very basic: the fight or flight response. That response — an accelerated heart rate, dilated pupils and rising blood pressure, readying the body for action — may be orchestrated by the salience network
“I think it comes on line anytime there is a challenge to be met and allows the brain to marshal the body’s resources,” said Greicius. The fight or flight response would be an extreme example, “but low-level challenges still require marshaling of those physiologic resources,” he said.
Scientists don’t yet know the exact role the salience network plays in perseverance, but they do know that disrupting the network can have a profound effect. Rodents with damage to their version of the anterior cingulate give up more easily than others when trying to find food. And deterioration in the salience networks in frontotemporal dementia has been linked to lack of drive.
They theorize that paying too much attention to one’s thoughts may give them undue significance. “These disorders might be partially understood as conditions in which an excessive amount of salience is attributed to situations or stimuli that don’t merit that much attention,” Greicius said.
Too much activity in the salience network can also be problematic. Seeley and Greicius’s original study found that the people who reported the most anxiety before they entered the brain scanner also showed the strongest network connections; and hyperconnectivity in the network has been linked to autism.

Direct detection of Ebola virus using chip based technology

The current gold standard for Ebola virus detection relies on a method called polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify the virus's genetic material for detection. Because PCR works on DNA molecules and Ebola is an RNA virus, the reverse transcriptase enzyme is used to make DNA copies of the viral RNA prior to PCR amplification and detection.
A team led by researchers has developed chip-based technology for reliable detection of Ebola virus and other viral pathogens. The system uses direct optical detection of viral molecules and can be integrated into a simple, portable instrument for use in field situations where rapid, accurate detection of Ebola infections is needed to control outbreaks.
The system combines two small chips, a microfluidic chip for sample preparation and an optofluidic chip for optical detection.
Ebola virus RNA--are isolated by binding to a matching sequence of synthetic DNA (called an oligonucleotide) attached to magnetic microbeads. The microbeads are collected with a magnet, nontarget biomolecules are washed off, and the bound targets are then released by heating, labeled with fluorescent markers, and transferred to the optofluidic chip for optical detection.
In laboratory tests, the system provided sensitive detection of Ebola virus while giving no positive counts in tests with two related viruses, Sudan virus and Marburg virus. Testing with different concentrations of Ebola virus demonstrated accurate quantification of the virus over six orders of magnitude.
The team has not yet been able to test the system starting with raw blood samples. That will require additional sample preparation steps, and it will also have to be done in a biosafety level 4 facility
.
The team reported their results in a paper published in Nature Scientific Reports.

Analysis of clustered cancer mutations

Mutations in cancer-associated proteins sometimes cluster within 3D structures, such as substrate-binding pockets of cancer-causing enzymes.
Researchers developed a statistical method called clustering of mutations in protein structures (CLUMPS) to detect novel cancer genes and mutational hotspots in known genes through analysis of clustered protein mutations.
Using CLUMPS, the authors analyzed DNA mutations in 4,742 tumors of 21 types and compared the mutations with structural and protein interaction data for more than 4,000 human proteins in Protein Data Bank, a longstanding repository of protein structures.
Mutation clusters were detected in four known on coproteins, five known tumor suppressor proteins, and a protein called NUF2, required for proper chromosome separation during cell division, but in which mutations had not been previously linked to cancer.
CLUMPS helped confirm tissue and tumor type-specific clustering of mutations in the cancer-associated proteins EGFR and SPOP, respectively. Mutations were also enriched at ion binding sites of cancer-related proteins and at interfaces with their interacting partners, including DNA and RNA.
Because clustered rather than scattered mutations are more likely to reflect selection for functions boosting cell growth, 3D mutation cluster analysis might help narrow the search for the drivers of cancer, according to the authors.

Tales Of Panchatantra: The Monkey and the Crocodile

There was a Jamun (Black-berry) tree on the bank of a river, which was full of sweeet Jamun fruits throughout the year. This tree was home to a monkey called Raktamukha. He used to pass his days happily by playing and jumping, and used to eat the sweet Jamun fruits.
One day, a crocodile named Karalamukha came out of the river to take some rest under the Jamun tree. When Raktamukha saw him from the tree, he said, "O Crocodile, this tree is my home and you have come under this tree to take rest. This makes you my guest. Please accept some Jamun fruits."
Raktamukha plucked lots of fruits and threw them in the crocodile's mouth. Karalamukha loved the sweet fruits, and became friendly with Raktamukha. Karalamukha left in the evening after thanking the generosity of the monkey.
Karalamukha started coming to the Jamun tree every day, and they became good friends. They would talk for a long time and enjoy eating the sweet Jamun fruits together.
One day, Karalamukha said to Raktamukha that he wanted to take some of the Jamun fruits for her wife to let her know of the sweetness of these fruits. So, the monkey happily plucked more fruits for the crocodile to take home.
Karalamukha took those fruits and offered his wife to eat them, and narrated the story of his friendship with the monkey who lives on the Jamun tree. The crocodile's wife was overjoyed on eating those sweet fruits.
She said, "O Dear, these fruits are as sweet as nectar. If the monkey eats these fruits every day, I wonder, he would be even tastier. Please bring the monkey's heart for me."
Karalamukha was astonished on hearing this. He said, "O Dear, I cannot kill or deceive the monkey for his heart. He is my friend. It is unfair to think of such a thing"
But his wife pleaded for the monkey's heart. When she could not convince the crocodile of doing it for her, she stopped eating, and insisted that we would rather die if the crocodile refused to do as she wished.
Karalamukha was left with no other choice but to succumb to her wishes. Although he was sad, he devised a plan to catch his friend and went to Raktamukha.
He said, "O Friend, my wife love the fruits very much and I told my wife about our friendship. Now, she is anxious to meet you. She is angry on me for not introducing you with her earlier. So, she has invited you to our home for dinner. Please accept our invitation."
The monkey accepted at once, but how could he go to the crocodile's home? I could not swim. The crocodile said, "Sit on my back, and I shall carry you to my home"
And so Raktamukha sat on Karalamukha and they entered the water of the river. Karalamukha took him to deeper water where he planned to kill him. At the same time, Raktamukha got very scared with so much water all around him. he pleaded his friend to move slowly.
At this moment, the crocodile knew that he had succeeded in his plan and had the monkey totally under his control. He thought that it was not possible for the monkey to escape from him so he revealed his plan, "O monkey, the truth is I am taking you to make my wife happy. She wishes to eat your heart. She believes that the taste should be even better than the Jamun fruits you have all the time."
Upon hearing this, Raktamukha was taken aback. But he did not panic. Instead, he wittingly said, "O Friend, Why didn't you say that before? It would be my priviledge if I could serve your wife with my heart. You are such a good friend, and you should have told me earlier. I keep my heart in the burrow of the Jamun tree. Let us go back and bring my heart at once."
The foolish crocodile believed him, and turned around. Karalamukha took Raktamukha to the Banyan tree believing the monkey to bring his heart from the tree. But as soon as Raktamukha jumped down from the crocodile's back, he climbed up the tree and sat on a high branch. He had finally saved himself from the crocodile's evil plan.
Karalamukha wanted to know, "What is causing this delay? We are getting late, and my wife has been waiting."
Raktamukha answered, "O foolish friend, how can one take out his own heart and keep it in the burrow of the tree? You deceived me to kill me, and in return I tricked you in saving myself. Let this be a lesson to you for being so unfaithful. Go away, and never return back."
The crocodile knew he had been tricked, and felt ashamed for his actions. He went away.

ESTRADIOL levels modulate BRAIN ACTIVITY and negative responses to psychosocial STRESS across MENSTRUAL cycle

The results of this study suggest that, in normally cycling premenopausal women, high Estradiol levels attenuate the Brain activation changes and negative mood response to psychosocial stress.
Brain activity responses to psychosocial stress differed between women in the low versus high estrogen phase of the menstrual cycle: women with high estradiol levels showed significantly less deactivation in limbic regions during psychosocial stress compared to women with low estradiol levels.
This study showed that higher estradiol levels at periovulation were associated with greater hippocampal activity during psychosocial stress in normally cycling premenopausal women.
Greater estradiol levels during the periovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle (a very short duration of time equal to 2—4 days) decrease the brain activity change in response to psychosocial stress, and reduce the acute behavioral and mood consequences of the stress experience.
Please note that these Estradiol levels in pre menopausal women are the extremely highest E levels of the monthly cycle...easily up in the 300 to 400 range or more...and these levels are beneficial for handling stress, while lower levels of E during the rest of the month are NOT.
Additionally, women with higher estradiol levels also had less subjective distress in response to the MIST than women with lower estradiol levels.
Notice this data is derived from the precise moment of a particular routine stress being induced during a particular day of month for the woman and the association between her Estradiol blood levels AND the hippocampal circuit activity resulting when the stress is experienced.....
The study's results suggest that low estradiol levels during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle exaggerate the effect of psychosocial stress on brain activity. Women with higher periovulatory estradiol levels also had lower distress scores following the psychosocial stress task
"This study is unique in that that we used a moderate psychosocial stressor in the MRI environment at different menstrual phases, which allowed us to examine both the subjective mood response and brain activity response to the stress task. Also our stress task included social evaluative threat—–a type of stress that may be particularly relevant for mood in women . Our data suggest that estradiol buffers the brain activity changes and nega- tive mood response to psychosocial stress in normally cycling women.
http://www.psyneuen-journal.com/…/S0306-4530(15)00…/abstract
The authors state: Estradiol may affect emotional responding through increased top-down modulation of emotional circuitry, including brain areas involved in the stress response, and may be protective against fear and anxiety.
To us, this finding is all the more significant in view of the ongoing bias in the Medical Profession to prevent peri-menopausal women from obtaining higher levels of Estradiol via Replacement equivalent to those of their youth
This odd bias towards menopausal women has also extended to the Hormone Replacement protocols for the currently burgeoning population of those who are labelled as "Transgender" and are deprived of Estradiol levels of younger women, despite their age, and forced into depression, stress, and often suicide by the bizarre prevention of access to sufficient Estradiol to cope with stress properly.
See this recent article in the New York Times which chronicles vividly what happens to women when their Estrogen levels plummet at Menopause for an extended period of time
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/…/18/magazine/18estrogen-t.html…
"Increased emotional processing and physiological response to psychosocial stress, during low estrogen menstrual phases, may contribute to depressed mood in women with vulnerability to MDD. Indeed, women with MDD have greater HPA axis dysregulation than men with MDD suggesting that the stress system may be particularly important to depression in women.
They state: " Estradiol may attenuate sympathetic and HPA axis activity to stress Although our study did not include women with mood disorders, the effect of estradiol on brain activity and mood response to psychosocial stress suggest that periods of low estradiol are associated with heightened negative emotional responding.
"Previous work using the MIST has revealed deactivations during the stress condition of the task, in brain areas that are part of the limbic circuit (including hippocampus, hypotha- lamus, medio-orbitofrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex)
Studies have proposed that reduced limbic circuit function is associated, perhaps causally, with the stress response. Additionally, hippocampal deactivation during the stress condition of the MIST has been directly related to cortisol release and inversely correlated with measures of self-esteem, indicating that hippocampal activity is a marker of both the peripheral endocrine response to stress and related to psy- chological vulnerability to psychosocial stress
The further finding that cortisol response to the MIST was associated with prefrontal deactivation agree with animal models showing worse performance on tasks that rely on prefrontal cortex following acute stress
Normal ovarian hormone fluctuations may alter the impact of psychosocially stressful events by presenting periods of increased vulnerability to psychosocial stress during low Estradiol phases of the menstrual cycle. This menstrual cycle—related fluctuation in stress vulnerability may be relevant to the greater risk for affective disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder in women.

Déjà vu is a French term that literally means "already seen" and has several variations, including déjà vécu, already experienced; déjà senti, already thought; and déjà visité, already visited. French scientist Emile Boirac, one of the first to study this strange phenomenon, gave the subject its name in 1876.
There are often references to déjà vu that aren't true déjà vu. Researchers have their own definitions, but generally déjà vu is described as the feeling that you've seen or experienced something before when you know you haven't. The most common misuse of the term déjà vu seems to be with precognitive experiences -- experiences where someone gets a feeling that they know exactly what's going to happen next, and it does. An important distinction is that déjà vu is experienced during an event, not before. Precognitive experiences -- if they are real -- show things that will happen in the future, not things that you've already experienced. (However, one theory about déjà vu deals with precognitive dreams that give us a "déjà vu feeling" afterwards. See the Déjà Vu and Precognitive Dreams section.)

Lord Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple in PAKISTAN

Lord Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple in PAKISTAN

Karachi Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir in Pakistan, 1500 years old Panchmukhi Hanuman Mandir located at Soldier Bazaar in Karachi is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Pakistan. The temple holds special significance for Hindus as it is the only shrine in the world which has a “natural statue” of Hanuman that is not man-made.

The blue and white 8 feet statue was found many centuries ago at the place where the temple now stands; it bears all five aspects of Hanuman : Narasimha, Adivaraha, Hayagriva, Hanuman and Garuda. It is believed that such naturally-formed idols of deities possess exceptional power and appear to bless worshipers.
Upon entering the temple, one is struck by the intricately carved yellow stone structure in the middle of the temple premises. This temple’s renovation work has started in 2012 and to preserve the look of the temple, its original yellow stones are being used to rebuild the arched walls.
The small front porch has pillars of carved yellow stone on either side with a black and white marble floor, a wide passage for clockwise circumambulation (parikrama / pradakshina) runs around it.It is believed that completion of 108 rounds around the chambers, cleanses all pain, evil and adversity, making this temple a citadel of healing for all castes and creed. India.Multiple communities like Maharashtrians, Sindhis, Balochis visit this temple.

The Killers

The acting debut of Burt Lancaster and one of the quintessential film noirs of the 1940s, The Killers is partially based on the short story of the same name by Ernest Hemingway. The film was directed by Robert Siodmak (director of quite a few great noirs as well Criss Cross and The Crimson Pirate, both starring Lancaster) and stars Ava Gardner, Edmond O'Brien and Sam Levene alongside the young Lancaster. The screenplay was attributed to Anthony Veiller although it was actually co-written by John Huston and Richard Brooks and the film almost didn't feature Burt Lancaster as Universal was unable to secure their first pick for the role, Wayne Morris, when Warner Brothers would not lend him to them.
The film starts off when two hired guns arrive in a small town at night searching for Ole "The Swede" Anderson (Lancaster). After getting information from some locals, they track him down and kill him, despite the fact that the Swede was warned but made no attempt to escape or change his fate. An insurance investigator (O'Brien) is sent in to examine the case and find the beneficiary of Anderson's policy and from there on in the film tells its story via a complex set of flashbacks in which it is revealed that Anderson once participated in a huge payroll robbery after his boxing career was cut short due to injury. The main reason for Anderson's descent into crime was Kitty Collins (Gardner), the femme fatale he fell in love with but who married crime boss"Big Jim" Colfax whilst Anderson did a short stint in jail, and we come to learn how it was her involvement in a web of crime, lies and deceit that ultimately led to Anderson's willing acceptance of his faith.
One of the truly great film noirs, The Killers features all the genre staples including voice-over narration, a complex flashback structure, a femme fatale, stark black and white photography, a crime gone awry and a downbeat ending. Additionally, the film's night-for-night opening scene is truly classic, not only for its true night setting but also for setting up the story in a truly intriguing fashion as Lancaster laconically accepts his own murder. The screenplay is strong and complex, the cinematography stylish and the film made an almost instantaneous star out of Lancaster whilst also doing wonders for the career of Ava Gardner, who became a genuine sex symbol as a result of her role as the sultry Kitty Collins. The Killers received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Director and Screenplay, whilst it won Best Film at the Edgar Allan Poe Awards. A truly essential film noir.
